    Hi guys,

after like 9 month of joy with my 8510p i have finally run into some problems.
it looks like the monitor cable is broken, but i´m not 100 % sure.

here´s whats happening to me :

when i start the laptop from cold state i have this really weird display when the whole display is distorted.

the upper third of the display shows the actual window it should display, but this one is also distorted strange horizontal lines show up there. i can move the mouse in this "compressed" view. mostly the lower 2/3 are not in use and only show shadows of the previous display window.

this happens under windows and during startup. so it definetly is not a driver problem.

after a few minutes i found out, when i push the display gently at the right side and pull a little at the left side the display i showing a good picture, but as soon as i release the display the corruption is back again.

my guess is that it´s the monitor cable, but i´m not quite sure.

after running for about 10 minutes the picture is stable , as long as i do not touch or move the display, because when i do that the diplay is corrupted again.

somebody had a similar experience before ? and is the monitor cable a part that is covered by warranty ?

    thanks for your input guys.

It should be covered by the warranty as it sounds like a hardware problem. You can try plugging and unplugging the inverter? Although that would require opening up the screen........The user manual covers it pretty well i think.

Ironically I was thinking to myself this morning...''isn't it great that no 8510p users on here have complained about anything?'' ... :(

thanks for your reply johnny t.
hope it´s nothing more than just the cable, since i´ll have to deliver a website next week. can´t effort to send the laptop in for some weeks ;)

i guess i will not try to open the screen, as long as i´m not sure if i am voiding the warranty. will remove the keyboard and check if the cable at the graphics card is plugged in correctly. i am at work right now, and can´t open the laptop until i am at home. so i´ll try later.

    have added some pictures...

i can reproduce these images when i push or pull the screen housing a bit. it takes a few minutes to find a stable position again, when the display is not distorted. :(

yeah, thats exactly what i was thinking....

tried to make use of hp´s instant chat, but it looks like in germany we may not have access to that feature. my P/N - S/N combination did not work- it says invalid product number.

just checked back with my registered products warranty state, and it says i have registered the notebook at 11.11. 2007 and warranty is still valid until 2010.
guess i´ll have to call them.

You can make and track a warranty claim online at http://itrc.hp.com
HP is the only vendor I know that offers such a convenient service for individual customers. It's very easy and they will arrange for a fix within the next business day.

    yes, thanks chrixx,

i already used this service earlier today. about 3 hours ago i made my repair claim online, got the confirmation email around 30 minutes later. another 45 minutes later i received a call from a german speaking hp tech.

we agreed on an onsite pickup tomorrow and a complete new screen for the notebook. so far so good. now i feel quite comfortable with the business warranty :)

i hope the hp repair service won´t take very long to exchange the screen.
