when i ran "hp performance tuning framework" for some odd reason it recognizes my graphics card as a firegl v5600. also why is it that 8510w is present on the page. maybe hptf is only for workstations, sorry if this is a stupid question.

It probably has no idea what to call the HD 2600 so it just picks the closest thing? :p

I do remember HP originally stating that with the 8510w, you could have the choice of the nVidia Quadro (forget the model) or the ATi FireGL V5600 cards.... I'm pretty sure the FireGL V5600 is the workstation version of the Radeon HD X2600.

On a related note, something like that happened to my laptop when I dropped it off at the local help desk to get the AC adapter replaced. When I got it back, my resolution was all messed up, and windows came up with "Found new hardware--ATi Radeon X1600" Turned out that the help desk messed up something in the BIOS, which caused the graphics card to be detected as a Radeon X1600, and not as a FireGL V5200 (They're really the same card for the most part).

Also, NHC likes to detect my notebook as an nc8430 and not as an nw8440... but I kind of expected that to happen anyway. ;)

So, I'm wondering if there's a BIOS setting in the 8510 series to change it between Radeon X2600 and FireGL V5600?

Yes, the FireGL V5600 is the workstation version of the HD 2600, and HP should have offered both options -- Quadro FX 570M/ FireGL V5600... and so on.
