won't this let in a lot of dust?

I'm a big fan ;) of modding, but in my opinion this mod is not good...

That vent in the bottom is designed to restrict the cold airflow into that vent, and so it allows other air to be sucked out of the laptop from all over the laptop. Ever notice all those other small carefully placed holes/vents that are miles away from the fan?

Air going in that fan vent gets immediately pushed through the heatsink and out the back vent, which is great, for the CPU/GPU, but for the rest of the components on the system board? - not so much.

Sure, your CPU, GPU and NB temps may be lower, but temps inside the laptop will be higher. I suggest you try touching one of those big power supply inductors near the CPU when you are doing a benchmark run, you will burn your finger even at the best of times.

With this mod you have just gone and removed most of that important hidden airflow.

Ok I guess it is a bit counter intuitive, let me try to explain again...

The CPU, GPU and NB temps that you get to measure are all the on dye temps of the chips themselves. They are the major contributors to heat generation inside a laptop chassis, but they are by no means the only heat generators.

By cooling the heatsink fins more by using this mod, all you are doing is cooling those 3 dyes more, but at the expense of losing airflow from other places around the laptop.

So all those other components that you cant measure are now operating inside a mini oven.

    FANTOMASZ,

Can you report on the actual drops in temperature compared to "before" the mod?

I think what stumo means is that the output fan(s) only put out a certain volume of air, therefore if you make an opening close to the output fans, the air being pulled out will be replaced by air from the opening closest to the fan, the huge opening

When it is unmodded, air coming in through that (the close) vent is limited, therefore more air is pulled in from the other areas of the laptop that have vents (because the replacement air has to come from somewhere).

I did a similar thing to my notebook, but I noticed a lot more dust in my fan and heatsink. And I also agree with what stumo is saying.

    Anyway I reversed my mod.

You could tape fan filter material over the fan intake, which would both restrict airflow and greatly reduce dust collection.

Being a heli pilot as well as a puter geek, lets think in terms of air pressure/volume for what Stumo is saying.

You have a fan moving a certain volume of air per minute, and air has to rush in to replace air being blown out, in effect you have a slight negative pressure inside the case.

You want that because of the other vents besides the main one over the fan which give airflow thru the case over the other componants.

Remove mesh and you now lose some of that negative pressure generated because more air now flows into the fan directly.

I agree that fantomasz would see a drop in temp, because you now have a more direct airflow thru the fan area itself, going over the CPU/GPU heatsinks.

But ultimately you are losing cooling on other components and the mainboard itself IMO.

BTW you'll notice those other vents have filter material over them as well.

I think about it.I make small brushed grill.I use double side tape to install so I can remove later and try with filter.

I don't feel any temp increase in other areas so should be ok

new grill which look much better now
