Hello evryone, I have the dv9500t that died yet a third time because of the nvidia problem.

I am wondering if I can buy a new laptop, which would probably be a base model, and then successfully transplant the CPU and RAM and HDD into the newer laptop. My CPU is still WAY better than anything out there in todays base models (C2D T7300 4MB L2 Cache, etc etc) and I have 4GB of RAM installed. I have 2 HDDs, one is 160GB, one is a 320GB HDD that I plan on installing onto the new laptop.
So basically, RAM and HDD specs arent important to me in the new laptop except that my current one from the dv9500t fit, as well as the CPU being able to fit in the new laptop.

So is this possible? and for which laptop?
I need to buy a laptop asap, but it sucks that my 3yr old dv9500t is still margins better than today's base models... i was hoping that today's base models would be as good or even better than my current model :(

Well, the HP G71 would probably work out just fine for what your planning. The base CPU on that is clocked a tad higher than yours but has 2/3rds less cache. Should have identical thermal specs too (yours might be a tad hotter because its 65nm) and its one of the base systems so it still uses Socket P and DDR2 Ram. You would have to settle for less graphics wise (Intel X4500) but the upshot is reliability (no more Nvidia). If you were willing to risk it you could order it with the Nvidia G103 which I have heard some good things about, namely that it doesn't have the tendency to horrifically fry and kill the system, but its going to be a while before I can fully trust Nvidia in laptops again . . . Now for the bad news. The G71 can only take 1 HDD so unless you plan on swapping it with the one thats already in there your out of luck for trying to run dual HDDs like the dv9000s and dv7/8s can.
One More thing to consider though. After pricing it out, that G71 will cost you $579-679. What you said about a base model system not being better than your dv9500t is not exactly true. Go have a look at the dv7t on the HP website. The base starts you off at $799 but your getting a Core i3 (has less cache than your CPU now but all things considered should be just a little bit faster, little higher clock, on chip memory controller ect) just as much DDR3 RAM and the G105 base graphics should be just as good as the 8400/8600 you had in your 9500, and you would be able to run two hard drives again. Good luck with your decision.

Edit: after looking into it a little more the G105 would not be as good as an 8600, but should be faster than the 8400.

    thanks alot!!! you are right!

i have narrowed it down to 3 different laptops today.
my father, who is my biggest role model/inspiration told me to buy something good for now, and then buy a used dv6500t or dv9500t or whatever else wihtout nvidia and swap in my CPU/RAM/HDD

mainly i want to add my HDD biggest of its bigger capactituy. although running two drives would be great, i dont really need to. and also, i can sacrifice on the grapics since i dont game on my laptop (or game in general) anymore.
excuse any errors and mistakes i made just now. im highly intoxicated at te moment.

also, you are true regarding the dv7 laptop having compareble specs than mine at only 799ish.... i was actually looking for someting along $500ish, 15inch screen. also, by "base" i meant any cheapest laptops out there that arent mini netbooks. i expected that by now, the 500$ laptops would be as good or better than my dv9500t from 3 years ago.

i multitask A LOT. my laptop came wih 2GB of RAM and i would routinely max it out... then i upgraded to 4GB of RAM. I havent maxed out yet, but i still use so much that i regularly have 1.5GB-700ish MB of free RAM.
alot of open windows, open tabs, office docutments, picture eiditing stuff, AIM, and also on my breaks i watch movies and shows online (i will miss my 17inch screen) etc. the extra RAM came in handy, as well as the prcessing prower that helped run all those things together, haha. and ofcourse, the SUPER LARGE screen that allwoed me to fit so much. im aiming towards someting that is 15inch widescreen rather than anything bigger... i dont want a smaller screen either. i feel 15inch laptops are the best of both worlds (portabilty and screen size). the dv9500t was awesome during its time because of its 17inch screen, however it was SO heavy and painful to carry around sometimes and very bulky.
i honetly dont know what im typming right now so i will stop. good luck

I'm almost in the same situation...

But I think I'll make the switch to a... Macbook Pro...
Those are the fastest machines to run... Windows.
And then you get 2 machines in one: a Mac and a fast Windows...

If only they had better keyboards, I hate those keys.

Goodtimes. Anyways the only thing in your price range that fits from HP is the G60, and well . . . need I say more. They do have the G62 which looks promising (Icore CPUs) but you have to get over the cheesy "macbook wannabe" styling, big thing is, the G62 and the G71 are priced the same. As far as going used, anything up to dv6900/9900 will have parts commonality as long as its Intel your stuff will fit, although if its a 9*00 that didn't come with a 2nd HDD, you will have to put the bracket off yours in. Also intel dv9000s are hard to find without the nvidia graphics. As far as I know the Intel X4500 was only offered for a short time or was only available in other countries. an intel dv6*00 would be way easier to find and you could do everything except the dual HDDs.

Yeah I'm not a huge Fan of the G60 series either
