Wanna hear something funny? I had taken my dv9000 down to a local, reputable computer repair shop a couple months ago and asked for an estimate to repair my dv9000's blank screen/not working wireless card/not working headphone jack.
He replied that they REFUSE to do any work on HP dv series laptops with my symptoms for the same reason as stated above- the computer would have to be completely rebuilt from practically the ground up with all new guts and he stated I would spend less buying an inexpensive laptop from ASUS that might not have all the same features, but would work fine for me.
At the time we didn't know yet about what replacement we where getting, but I told him about the settlement and he said he would inform his customers with similar HP problems about it in the future.

I think it's ironic that they are using the Square Trade report as evidence. First of all, they found about a 30% failure rate for all laptops at 3 years (including netbooks). For HP laptops, this rate was projected to be 25% at 3 years for notebooks. Apparently 25% is the same as every 3-year-old computer being useless. Also, the percentages are lower for higher-end computers. Which is why I (am I'm sure lots of you) bought a more-expensive model in 2008. I didn't just pick the cheapest model, because I did want it to last more than 3 years.
What I think is REALLY disconcerting is that this report was compiled in late 2009. I couldn't find the dates of laptop manufacture for the units in this study, but I don't think it would be a stretch to say some of the class computers are in the study. This would be circular reasoning: "Your faulty computer would have been at the end of its life because the failure rates are high, in part because your computer was faulty." This defense is laughable. Maybe it's a good sign that they are resorting to bad arguments? Sorry for the long post. -

I did the heat lamp (500w halogen) for a couple of minutes to the back side of the GPU/motherboard (have to shield the rest of the board from the heat). Then pressing for a couple of minutes while it cooled. Reassembled with arctic silver thermal compound and a penny (shim) to make sure there was positive contact to the heat sink.
It worked for a few more months, though I had to make sure I always ran it on "Max Bat" power save mode so as not to overheat it again. Even on Max Bat I bet it would out perform the Asus. -
KC468UA; KC474UA; KC475UA; KC479UA;
Of course mine is a KC306UA. dv6770se that I bought right before I left for Afghanistan. It is 3 years old and just crapped out the other day. I haven't had any problems with it. It still looks brand new! The fans got loud the day before and then the next day it just shut down while using it. Now have to wait 5 min to restart and then never can tell how long it will last before it crashes again. -
Here's an article on : Getting the Lead Out of Electronics
Getting the Lead Out of Electronics
This why a hair dryer or a 500 watt light for two minutes isn't enough heat to completely do the job of re seating a chip correctly.
I would say if you used a 250 watt light and raised it approximately 16" above the chip and used a magnifying glass to direct the heat to the chip and use a infrared heat sensor to bring the chip to approximately 160* to 183* C for two minutes, should suffice the job. There is a place on YOU TUBE that offers it done with an infrared machine for $ 79.95, return shipping included. -
All joking aside, that is how mine bit the dust too... Just a matter of time before you turn it on and everything lights up except for the screen. -
I had a close-up of the sun as my desktop background, and when the ratio went out it looked like someone stepped on it.
After my last torture session (a.k.a. HP customer service), where they made me reset to factory settings (I complied in the vain hope of getting one more motherboard out of them) it got worse. Now I get the three beeps and a black screen. So far I've been able to stick it under the blankets and get it working (except for the squashed images). -
How about lightening the mood? Anyone keep copies of their HP Customer Service chats? Always good for a laugh. Here's one of my favorites:
Pat: After being instructed to restore to factory settings, it now got the same lines and same blue screen during a reboot during installation.
Pat: Now it is stuck in the loop with error saying
Pat: the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot continue
Richard : If I understand the issue correctly the display on screen is not clear .Am I correct?
I should have replied "No, the error messages are very sharp and clear" -
You know, while Nvidia, HP and Milberg do the Tennessee Waltz all around the core case at hand. They can twist, turn, tap dance and even do a singalong. From the day we walked out of the stores with our computers they possessed faulty parts. We have spent years trying to get help from HP and whoever else with no avail. We have had partially functioning and/or dead computers for awhile. Truth is the computers were depreciated the minute they left the factory to no fault of ours. Why are they talking about end of life? We did not have the chance to wear or tear our computers. We were too busy trying to get them to function properly. Could not take them anywhere because the wifi was the first to go. We won't mention that it ran so hot you could cook an egg on it with the fan blowing full speed all of the time, then alas no video HP telling us to download some darn bios or update them, knowing full well that was not a fix and very risky for us to do. HP must have made some sort of payola deal with Nvidia to take the fall and give us a $200 computer. This just does not add up! How in the heck can you sell someone a $1000.00+ computer with faulty parts and when it finally fails which was inevitable, you offer them a $250.00- replacement. Judging from those bogus declarations looks like all of them are on the take. If this goes back in the court room we need an exhibit A and B side by side visual comparisons, our computers set-up next to the cq56 just in case all of the techno mumble jumble words goes over anyone's head. I will volunteer to send my Dv9005us with the expansion base, pay the postage to and from the court room. All parties involved have had full knowledge of the demise of our computers for years, it is not our fault so much time has passed. We reached out from the beginning for help and were brushed off like a pesky fly.

Actually I have been looking on the web for 2-3 weeks for a new computer and I was going to give my hp to my gf, as she does not currently have one. I ordered another computer and told her that I was going to give her mine (still looks brand new other than wear marks where wrists rest on the very front edge) But now I had to tell her that it crapped out because I was looking at a new computer and it was mad at me. (Still worked like new up until a few days ago, and then it just quit and been having all sorts of problems) Not to mention I have been on norton site telling thm I have a virus and they have been remotely running my computer and trying to fix my issues. 3 days of chatting with them and being disconnected while they are remotely running my computer and trying to fix my issues.
I AM DISGUSTED AND WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE. I WILL ALSO MAKE SURE NONE OF MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY EVER BUY FROM THEM EVER AGAIN. I AM IN THE MILITARY AS WELL SO I WILL MAKE SURE THAT ALL MY TROOPS DO NOT BUY HP AND SPREAD THE WORD TO THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS TO NOT PURCHASE HP. I HOPE THE SCUMBAGS GO OUT OF BUSINESS FOR THIS STUNT THEY ARE PULLING. -

). I know this sounds absolutely nuts, but I have done this trick several times and it's an instant way to confirm this issue. Once out, don't worry about the little bit of surface frost that may have formed. It doesn't seem to bother them and the units will usually run OK until you shut them down. Then no start.
Obviously (I hope), I'm not suggesting that you do this on a daily basis, but if you want to confirm the issue or recover data without removing the HDD...it usually works. In the end, once it gets to this point, what does it really matter. It's a paper weight looking for a recycling center.....or a lawsuit!! -
Side note the comp runs better on battery saver mode. Lasts longer and lets me getmore accomplished. After my initial crash I was able to still connect to internet (wireless) I can no longer connect. -

I had posted last night that my friend was bringing me her daughter CQ56 to use so I could compare to my DV9000, well it turns out hers is a CQ60. She only paid $299 at Best Buy last year. Looking at her laptop it doesn't look that bad but the one they are sending us is a step or two below this one. All I can say is I am so disgusted that they are trying to get away with this crap.
One more thing a guy that was going to try to fix mine said he know a lot of people have sued HP in small claims court and won with the DV laptops. I know it says we can't sue NVIDIA but what about HP? He said there were more problems with them than just the NVIDIA chip. He has had so many come in for repair. Let's just not give up you never know the Judge could rule in our favor with the great help of Mr. Ted Frank! (Thank you so much Ted) Here's hoping...If I have to take the piece of crap and get my $500 for past repairs I will sell the crap for $300 and use the $500(if I even get that) and buy me a new laptop. Of course not a HP. What is the best brand? We all need to keep letting everyone know not to buy anything from HP. -

tell your friends to check out the site and see if they have an hp that is included in the settlement. if not, ask them to tell their friends, and so forth.
time is running out so do it now.... -
That way, you have filed it, even if it gets rejected with insufficient data (which "should" give you some time to resubmit with your official receipt) -

@Goldee25 - When it comes to HP products, "caveat emptor" definitely applies.
Coming from a family of computer junkies, we have owned many brands of laptops and desktops, and we've had a minimum of 5 computers in use in our home at the same time for about the last 12 years. I've also used a wide variety of laptops in my career.
By far, the two brands we have had the fewest problems with--at home and at work--are Dell and Acer. We've had 3 HP laptops and one desktop in the last 5 years and all 4 systems were garbage. I've also had 2 HP laptops provided by my employer in the last 3 years, and both of them were garbage. Only one of the HP laptops was junk because of the NVIDIA defect. They (HP) simply do not produce reliable computer products.
One definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different outcome. We've permanently cured mental illness in our household by developing in an HP-free environment going forward. -
*** ASKING FOR A FAVOR FROM NBR members ***
We have lots of "newbies" joining NBR to read about the NVIDIA mess. Since there are so many posts, I am afraid that many newbies will be confused and don't know what to do.
Since time is very short, may I ask all members to edit their signatures to include:
"Have a defective HP notebook or tablet? You may qualify for a FREE notebook or tablet. Visit http://FAIRnvidiasettlement.com. Claim filing period ends on March 14, 2011 !!""
We need as many newbies as possible to submit their claims quickly.

Here's another article on solder:
Solder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I really think I stumbled on to what is WRONG with our computers here because all the feed back shows it's NOT the nVIDIA chip but the solder used. I Wish we had somebody from HP's motherboard Manufacturing facility that could tell us what solder they used. Now don't get me wrong about the nVIDIA chip getting HOT but that's why they use Heat Sinks and fans for the CPUs. Also HP knew there was a problem and did nothing about it so "I" feel this WHOLE thing falls on them. If an automobile Manufacturer finds that an insulator is falling off spark plugs, they don't KEEP using the same spark plug, they change it, at least until they find the problem and fix it and test it for many hundreds of hours. That's the problem with HP, "We are their TEST DUMMIES" and I for one, am " SICK and TIRED of it". We work HARD for our money(Well most of us) and I'm tired of being HPs Guinea Pig.
I wouldn't want to put my computer outside too many times (or in the freezer) because condensation will do more HARM than good.

a lot of the info into going into small claims to go after HP was at HPlies -
Finally, after waiting for 7 weeks after filing I have received my approval notice.
I want to ship in next week, as chances of getting me any thing better than CQ56 is not there for me as I have dv2000 model. I am any how following this thread, and hope for some thing better. -

I for one have the dv9000 and I do not want to take the cq56 at all. What am I going to do with it?
I would much rather take any netbook than that. At least I would likely use it that way. (throw it in my backpack for hiking and canoeing)
If we get stuck with the cq anyone want to buy one cheap? -
It replaced MLB of my laptop in 2008 as they extended the warranty(this is the only good thing). Same problem started again in 2009 after extended warranty expired. I understand HP replaced the same defective MLB. HP wanted few hundred bucks to replace the MLB again, off course with the same defective MLB.
Thanks god, I did not go that way. I spent half of the bucks and got a used DELL latitude from DFS with 6 months warranty still active. This laptop is still running great and has many better components like 2gb, 7200 rpm, core 2ghz. DELL gladly helped me to solve display/wireless issue even after warranty expired when i re installed XP.
I am bit lucky, my HP laptop did not crap out immediately and my wife used this laptop (with boot up problems, only my wife can start it) until few months back when it is completely crapped out.
I bought a Toshiba for her, but very disappointed with the tiny sound (it is a multimedia laptop) and slow even with a core i5. It is hard time for me to find a nice laptop for her, I have been to BB, OD. We liked samsung, but did not like the junk 0.3 mp webcam( we need a good one) and a so so screen.
Many times we wanted to buy a HP again (as It has every thing we need) hoping it will not have defective design. But either my mind/heart keep on pulling me back. At the end of story, I find a good deal on DELL, and bought it without any hesitation and we liked it very much for now. The main thing I am sick about HP is HP wanted me to pay few hundred bucks to replace with same defective MLB again which might have again carped out after a year.

I know very well that CQ56 is not good, and so I bought a replacement computer already (got bored of 7 weeks waiting time for approval). -

They lost the domain on HPlies.com, but they moved it to:
HP Lies: The nVidia Defect
They have guides to taking HP to small claims court, etc. at http://wokingham.webhosting.uk.com/~hplies/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=250b2e7312734596647b414071189c3e
But since we didn't exclude ourselves (on the basis of receiving a new HP replacement computer similar in kind and value), this won't be much help other than looking at past ordeals or recruiting new NBR members.
