Hi, I've currently got 40GB HD in the unit and I was thinking about replacing it with an 60GB 7200RPM HD. Now, HP has told me that I cannot use a 3rd party HDD as it will not interface for some reason (they didn't specify if it was hard or software related). I don't know. I mean, I could see it being a hardware issue as I am having a tough time trying to release the current HD from the mounting bracket (maybe it's not supposed to come off?). I wouldn't think it is software related but I wouldn't put it beyond HP. As it stands the least it would cost me for the HP authorized 60GB/72K HD is around $240; or $320+ direct from HP.
So the questions are
1. Is there anything proprietary about the HP HDs (software/hardware)?
2. Can I use a 3rd party HDD (from Newegg for example)?
Thanks

I don't know about your particular HP, but my zv5000z has a plastic adaptor that plugs into a standard notebook HD and a bracket the drive is mounted to. I suggest taking out your existing drive and seeing if you have something similar. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't buy a Hitachi 7200RPM drive and swap it in like I did.
You might check out the 100GB 5400RPM Seagate drives too. Tempting, but I don't know anyone who's played with them yet.
