I've been looking for the right widescreen with a decent graphics card, Bluetooth AND a Serial port on-board (odd combo I know, but I really need the serial port and the adapters are not 100% reliable for my legacy needs).
The NC8230 seems too good to be true, except for the price is a little higher than I was hoping to spend... Any tips on if these ever go on sale?
Comments from existing owners would be great too!

HP doesn't do it like Dell. Pre-configured models tend to be cheaper.

Get it on ebay. I think its around $900-1000 for a brand new nc8230. The only thing you need to do is find a reliable seller.
I have never seen a nc8230 on sale. Therefore I got it from ebay. -
yeah, the downside is that those models are the pre-builts w/o bluetooth or a dvd-rw I think. Can either of those be added later?

Take a look at the refurbished units on HP's web page. If you can find one that suits your specs, you can get a substantial savings. I picked one up a couple of months ago and I'm very satisfied with it. Check this link for more information. http://www.notebookforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130675&highlight=omec
