Just wanted to ask if the nc8430 evidenced the same X1600 'grainyness' issues found on other laptops with the same card (Z96j, etc.)...

Yeah - I'm asking because the other laptops just recently got BIOS updates to fix the issue. I want to know if the issue exists at all on the nc8430, and if so, is there / will there be a fix?

I'm not sure I fully undestand the issue but if you are referring to the quality of the LCD, I am not experiencing any problems. Since I bought the laptop back in the begining of August, I've updated the ATI driver only once.

The only thing I can think of to describe grainyness is what my old digital camera did.

As an example, if you were looking at an object in black with the camera, you would expect the LCD to show it in black. Instead, I could clearly see a mixture of green-purple-red in the picture. The pattern kind of reminded me of sand somehow.

What I can tell you though, is that the screen on the nc8430 is one of the best I've ever seen. And it IS the best notebook screen I've owned.
