Looks like the nc8430 of mine is getting a LITTLE hot...as it 101C hot (yes, I'm not joking). So I took the keyboard out and cleaned the fan, which was a dusty mess...some of the dust was starting to get out of the cooling system and overflow into the rest of the system. Not happy about that!

So anyway, I'd read through the cooling guide and I've been trying to think of ways to help this notebook out. I was wondering if you guys had any good suggestions. I was thinking about a cooling pad, but I'm not too sure which one would be best for the nc8430...anyone have one?

The cooling pad would have to work with my docking station attached too :confused2:

But yeah, any help/opinions would be great!

When I'm encoding video or playing games my temps get to about 65C and when it's idle it stays at about 45 to 50C.

Wow! Does it still get to 101C after you cleaned the dust out? Is that idle or load? If it's at idle, then it's definitely not normal; I know the NC8430 can get pretty warm but that's approaching throttle temps.

When you had it open, where exactly did you clean the dust from on the fan assembly? The reason I ask is that while the fan itself can get dusty, what's really important is how the dust looks around the edge of the heatsink where the air is initially pulled threw on its way over and out the side of the notebook.

Sweet...that gives me a good starting point!

Let's just say the building I live in is VERY dusty. I didn't clean my notebook since I got it...oops. Dust builds up very quickly here...so that didn't help either. Yup...months and months of dust bites me in the butt.

Nah, I'm back down to 62C idle and 85C gaming...that's a little higher than I care for, but I only did a quick clean so that I could even use my laptop tonight. That 101C was with the GPU working hard and the CPU doing some work as well...both parts were at about 100% usage.

I pulled the keyboard up, and took a vacuum to the fan and heatsinks from all sides. I'll pull it apart again tomorrow and look more carefully in those areas. Thanks!

101C degrees??? Which thermometer are you reading? TZ0 should be the one.
My nc8430 is 60C when idle and 72C when working at full thrutle.

I had NHC measuring TZ4 and was always showing 100C and wanted to shut down my system, until I made it point to the corretc thermometer (the 0, not the 4).

I"m afraid you won't find a cooler to work with the dock station. You need to choose one or the other. I have already said it multiple times here "why won't anybody manufacture a docking station with a cooler?" This is really a mystery for me as it seem such a logical and badly needed device.
Good work on the cleaning :) I would suggest you get a can of compressed air and do some regular dust-removing with it. It's not a substitute for a good manual cleaning but still the dust won't build up so fast and so thick.

Out of curiousity night, have you considered getting a separate air filter to remove some of dust where you are? Not for the laptop per se but for the room?

I've got an air filter for the living room (where I am a lot), but I'm moving out of that crap-hole in about two weeks. Hopefully, everything will be fine post-move.
