I am looking to upgrade my nc8430 Build: RB554UT#ABA. I have 2x512 right now and would like to replace one of the 512's with a singe 2048 DIMM. Advice on the following:

    1 - will the 2g and 0.5g conflict?
2 - any recommendations for Mfg and Type? Prices dropped a ton since I last looked $500 down to $150... hence my interest has increased.

    1. No, but it won't be dual channeled, meaning you lose ~10% speed, however it'll still be better than staying at 1 GB.

    2. Any reputable brand will do such as Crucial, OCZ, Patriot, Corsair...etc. You can find current deals here.

Thanks for the info. Couple more ???

If I went to just 1x2gig instead of 1x2gig+1x512 will I still retain the speed?
Is 2.5 gig better overall then?
Should I just go with 2x1gig then?

It's debatable, 3 GB is definitely better than 2 with dual channel. 2.5 v 2 w/ DC is hard to say, it would depend on the speed of the RAM. I say go 1x 2GB if you want to expand more in the future. Or 2x 1GB if you want to save some money now and will replace your laptop with a new one in the future.

Thanks for your help. It's just amazing that 2 gig RAM prices have drop 70% since I purchased my laptop several months back!

I am ready to go with the 2x1 gig upgrade. But now I am really confused. Here are the specs from Crucial that say it is compatible with my nc8430.

    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64

    I can only find PC2-4200 on Newegg.com

Also, will installing this memory void my warrenty in way? I did purchase the accidental inssurance for my nc8430. Thoughts?

No it won't void your warranty by installing the ram yourself.
