I am thinking of returning my MacBook Pro this weekend. One of the things that was really holding me back the combination of an x1600 with a matte screen. It is nearly impossible to find. Now I see that the nc8430 is exactly the same as the MBP and the same price to boot!(I get educational discount at Apple). So my questions. I am looking at the $1749 model. Why is so much cheaper than next model up? Do they throttle anything like the GPU or something? For those that have it, how is the build quality? Are there any issues that seem to be affecting them? Also, is it bulky? One of the best parts of the MBP is it sleekness. Very easy to carry around, unlike my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000.

I also am not familar with hp. How is their customer service and reliability? Is this going to be similar build to a Thinkpad or latitude? Overall, do you hp owners enjoy your experience and would you buy from them again?

    Thanks for all your help!

It's just that smart buy models are cheaper than non-smart buy ones.
No, it's not bulky. I have nw8240 which has the same chassis.

I have been very pleased with HP's nc and nw series, and the service has been good (at least in Finland). I'm buying again from them. Now considering nw8440. :)
