I have HP nc8430 with basic docking station and I am trying to connect it to an external 24" LCD over the DVI output. Will the DVI output on the docking station work with resolution 1920x1200?

I was just testing it with a HP 30" LCD. It worked, but only with resolutions smaller or equal to my notebook's native resolution (1280x800). When I set any higher resolution, the external monitor was turned off (well, there were some noises displayed). Is this normal? The HP 30: LCD is some simple monitor without any onscreen menu, so maybe that's the reason? I have tried several DVI cables...

    Thanks,
    Petr

You have to connect 30" monitor with 2 DVI cables if I remember correctly. 24" works with one DVI so there should be no problems. But I have not tried 24" on laptop yet.

The 30" LCD is 2560x1600 and it works on my father's PC with one Dual Link cable.

Anyone else is running 24" LCD through a docking station?

I was running one before my nc8430 died. It worked fine on a single link cable. With a dock.

The 30" screen will not work at native resolution with dual-link DVI cables and dual-link capable card. I do not believe the nc8430's X1600 was dual link capable, but I never tested.

Work fine with my NW8440 on both basic and advanced docking stations with Dell 2405WFP. Have been using it for year now.

LCD at UWXGA (1920x1200) resolution uses only a single link cable with blanking (I'm not sure), which this will only need to make sure that you have got the laptop that comes with discrete graphic likes ATi or Nv graphic chip. Mostly, all the model with integrated graphic will not be able to support 1920x1200 resolution.

However, what more I want to know is that it will support the 30" LCD or not ;)

Any card will support 1920x1200 over DVI as long as it supports reduced blanking. I have not heard of a card that does not.

Any card will support up to 2048x1536 with a VGA cable...even the integrated ones. Just do not expect to play games at those resolutions :D.

But with regards to the 30" LCD, you need to find out if the GPU supports dual-link DVI...as that is the only thing that is going to give you the resolution you need. Without dual-link, it is highly possible the LCD will default to 1280x800 (possibly a little higher but I doubt it).

    Thanks for responses!

In the nc8430 QuickSpecs is written:

DVI port in optional HP Docking Station (sold separately)
supports resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 at both full and reduced
blanking, and 1920 x 1200 at reduced blanking.

So I assume higher resolutions than 1920x1200 are not supported. Truth is that I wasn't able to make it run with my father's HP 30" LCD.

Higher resolutions require dual-link DVI, which the nc8430 does NOT have.

Yes, it's reduced blanking :D Thank for correction.

For the integrated one, it will not support 2048x1536 resolution since I have got one HTPC with the intel integrated laptop chipset. The resolution will be at best at 1600x1200 and it can be out put 1920x1080 on the intel chipset with Dual core processor (probably 950 IGP).

Anyway, my laptop is FireGL V5200 (x1600 variant) and the max it could do on the DVI-D is 1920x1200. And if you have got nx8430 with ATi mobility, it would be fine on 24" LCD via DVI-D on the docking station.
