I usually leave my computer plugging into my dock, which has it's own AC adapter. Rarely do I use the AC adapter that came with just the notebook itself.
So imagine my surprise, when working away from my home desk for several hours while plugged in, I almost burned my hand when I went to pick up and move the AC adapter! I'm not too sure if these temperatures compare to what they were when I first got the notebook...but my AC adapter is almost too hot to touch right now. I'm a little worried this could be a fire hazard...
However, the laptop is running really cool right now...talk about night and day differences here. I thought the laptop was supposed to be the hot part!
My question to other nc8430 users: how hot is your AC adapter getting, and is this normal? It's only a 90W adapter...![]()

Not nearly hot enough to burn myself. It's at about the same temperature as the left side of my NC8430.
-
The adaptor will get very hot if you charge the battery and use the laptop at the same time. Another reason for the higher temperature could be the electricity itself as it is not so uniform from plug to plug as one may think it should be.

The influence of voltage variations or disturbances on the line should be negligeable.
However, the road to smaller, more powerfull and cheaper adapters have led to many components being taxed heavier. I`d say that as long as you can hold it in your hand it is probably running within spec. -
mines get warm but not hot enough that I can't carry it. -
Mine runs quite warm when it is charging. If I charge the notebook from a low battery to full, it gets quite warm, but I can always hold it in my hand. Mines a 120 Watt supply. Maybe, you can try using a different adapter, and see if that gets hot. Hope this helps. -
Don't see it mentioned, but the A/C brick should not be left lying on carpet, bedsheets... soft material...
(Ditto on the unit itself)
If it was me I'd call HP to document the problem +maybe see if they have a 120 they could send you.
You may want to contact them via a method in which you have a written record of what was said in case your house burns down, so you can show you did contact them before hand.

The NC8430 90W adapter should not get that hot (so as you would burn your hand). Mine gets warm, but never hot, even when charging both the internal and extended batteries together.

warm at best (works well as a foot warmer), but definitely not scalding. It's even much cooler than the AC adapter for my previous Toshiba Satellite A100-SK9

my ac adapter wont charge my nc8430 anymore, and the brick makes a fizzing or beeping noise so i presume its malfunctioned, what replacement should i get? i rang hp and they told me id recieve a replacement but i havnt got it yet and i ordered on monday, but the post is funny at the minute so it could come this mondayinstead

Given body temp, I'd say my AC is about 40*C - and its been running 24/7 for 3 days as I'm burning in my new IEMs with Foobar
As stated, it shouldn't get that hot. I'd contact HP -
Make sure the AC adapter you using for the docking station is the 135w variety. The 90w one is for direct input to the laptop.
nc8430's AC Adapter Temperatures...HOT HOT HOT!!!
