No, no machine is only made to work with 1 and only 1 OS and any other OS will blow up ur machine. Heck you can even put 2000 or 98 on your machine just fine.

So don't worry about what OS you put in there, it doesn't matter as long as you have the drivers for it.

Before you do anything, be sure to create a full set of recovery discs (CD or DVD) and backup your data. You can use the discs at a later date to restore the notebook to it's factory configuration.

If you have all of the drivers for XP then you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting things up and running. The only real impact is that HP probably won't offer you much support should you encounter problems. Should a situation arise where you need to contact HP for assistance they may ask you to restore the factory OS to assist in troubleshooting.

Depending on your requirements re: hard drive space, instead of formatting the entire drive you may also want to consider a dual-boot scenario with both Vista and XP. You could use XP as your primary OS but still dabble with Vista once in a while. Microsoft is actively developing Vista updates and SP1 is in the works... perhaps your issues with Vista will be resolved in time.
