i am undecided between an amd athlon m xp 3000+ 1.6ghz
and a amd athlon 64 3000+ 1.8ghz with identical configuration in compaq presario 3000z

    the difference is about $75
but my main concern is whether the athlon 64 will overheat the notebook.

    any suggestions will be appreciated!

Get the A64! Much better chip, well worth the additional. I have it in an R3000Z Compaq, and heat is no problem. Only gets warmer when playing the most demanding games, but the fan kicks up to high when this happens to keep it cooled. Much cooler than the P4s. For normal operation, the CPU speed and voltages throttles way back, which gives long battery life, low fan speed, low heat with no noticable performance loss (how much do you need for word processing, anyway!)

Anyway, the other reason is when the 64 bit software arrives, you'll wish you had the right processor.

    Regards,
    Rich

I'd have to disagree about being cooler than the P4s unless you mean the desktop chips and not the P4 mobiles. However, for 75.00 I think you'll like the increased computing power and 64bit processor.

My zx5040us, P4M, 2.8 ghz blows 120 degree air out the right side while gaming, otherwise it is cool during everything else.
This is with a cool mat underneath as well.

I have checked this three times with different games.

I doubt you'll get better battery life from that maybe the same 3.5-4 hours but I'd be very suprised if you beat it.
