I have a new 2510p that has problematic behavior--any one have any suggestions? The following happens: the USB ports don't always work (and never for an IPOD--which works just fine on any other PC), it takes 15 minutes to boot when using an external display & dock (and then keeps losing the saved settings for how to run with an external display), it has lost its wireless settings and this past weekend it got caught in a doom loop of booting up after 15 minutes only to say that it had an NT system error and had to shut down immediately. I run this with XP, incidentally, and have had it less than 1 month.
Could this be a hardware (bus) problem or BIOS?
other?
Thanks,
Andy

I'm not sure how experienced you are with computers, but try a clean reformat and reinstall of windows. If that doesn't work, then it's a hardware issue, which, if that's the case, your only option is to contact HP.

OK: further information and further questions. The issue seems to relate strictly to when the laptop is networked. If it is NOT networked (either wired or wireless), it behaves appropriately with an external monitor and preserves network settings. If it is networked--to a network other than the one to which it was used when the setting were last updated--it will go into the doom loop of death--until I remove the network (detach the cable, turn off wireless), at which point it will complete its boot quickly. At that point I can reattach the cable and/or turn on wireless and it will work just fine with the (new) network.
This is just weird. Is this hardware (and *which* hardware--that associated with networks) or software, e.g DHCP? The doom loop is what is erasing the graphics/monitor & wireless settings--unless I intercept it by detaching/turning off the network completely during bootup.
Has anyone else with a 2510p seen this? Any ideas? -
When my 2510p was new it came with various hardware problems which I still did not get fixed:
- Trackpoint misaligned wrt keyboard. It was therefore very hard to press in the trackpoint rubber tip
- Distorted keyboard frame towards screen base. It rubs against the screen when the laptop is closed
- Misaligned fingerprint reader that emerges into the PCMCIA slot therefore making it difficult to insert PCMCIA cards
7 months now with the laptop:
- The trackpoint has left its imprint on the screen
- The loudspeaker has a bad contact and I occasionally have to hit the laptop close to the touchpad to restore sound
Now that's a soon-to-be unhappy customer! -
If your not connected to any server network, you can disable the Workstation service. Just go type msconfig in the run bar and go to the Services tab. This might fix your problem
