HP unleashes Envy 17 3D, HP Envy 14 Beats edition and specially-cooled Pavilion dm3 -- Engadget
what do you think?

-
backlit keyboard on envy 17? wish they woulda done a 15 to. Just bought my 14 so it's what ever for me
-
the red backlight is a nice change from the regular white/blue color
-
Cool, but not interested
-
Oh my god, that Beats Logo on the cover is just the biggest turnoff ever.
-
The new DM3 sounds really appealing. As for the Envy 14 beats edition... I would rather perfer the regular envy 14.
Does anyone know when these will go on sale? I am VERY intrested in the new dm3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Nice. I don't know if this is a refresh of the Envy line. I just RMA'd my Envy17 and hopefully I get one of these.
-
If you go to the website and click on "ultra portable" there is an error or says page does not exist. They are probably updating to the new DM3! I hope so! I will buy it tomorrow at work
-
The dm3 is pretty impressive! I wonder what the screen will be...
-
I'm sure the screen will stay where it's at. However if there is an upgrade I will take it, if it isn't $300 (outrageous).
-
No real news here. The new dm3 could have been exciting if they didn't make it so damn ugly.
-
The DM3 ugly? I perfer it over the etching of the Envy 14.
However i just found this:
HP Unveils Stylish New Consumer Notebook PCs Featuring Advanced 3-D and Cooling Technologies
Backlit keyboard
New touch pad like that of the Envy 14
New cooling system
Less than 1 inch thick
I3 or i5
Starting: $529
Once again, HOWEVER, they are claming 7.5 hrs of battery life, and we know how that turned out with the envy 14.... only 3.75 hours.
Edit- Engadget said i3-i5 config. But I am reading there wont be an i-series chip in this machine
Deal breaker!
Also, didn;t the old DM3 have deticated GPU? I don't see that in the new one, and the new design is Ugly! -
New dm3 and Envy 14 Beats are avail on the HP site now.
dm3 can apparently upgrade to the ULV i-series processors.
Envy 14 doesn't seem to have the option for Radiance screen (yet). Least it starts with Core i5. Also, according to the description it appears to be bundled with Beats Solos.
Edit - and like the poster above me said, no dedicated GPU for dm3. bummer =( . Also I agree, that design is kind of a step backwards. Reminds me of the old HP zv series lol. -
The red backlit keyboard lights and the big beats logo is a turnoff for me so still only interested in the old envy 14
-
I think they shoulda released the envys in black to start with, it looks really sexy. It looks more like the old black macbook which I always thought looked classier than the white ones.
What I'd like to see is a macbook replacement, not necessarily a macbook pro. That way they could concentrate more on getting a decent build instead of trying to fit the very best components into it.
That beats one looks seriously sexy, although, it would have been better without the giant b on the back. The subtle b on the key is enough. -
I wish they would release a black envy with radiance display plus a 5850 ati card equivalent or better..
-
those look supremely cool. I wish I could get it minus the beats logo everywhere.
hp seriously make black an option! -

You mean to tell me you wouldn't be proud of the fact that Dr. Dre built your laptop with his robot assistant?
-
i actually prefer the black over the floral design :]
-
-
DM3
Does not offer i5 (i3 only)
Is not less than 1 inch thin (1.26")
Uglier than previous DM3
No dedicated GPU (old dm3 had the option)
Starting price $630 (not $530 as mentioned)
7.5 hour battery life, HA!
They claimed over 9 on the old dm3 with a ulv cpu, it got around 4 -
Beats Envy 14 comes standard with 1366x768 display. No radiance 1600x900 upgrade option.
-
radiance option is 300 on regular envy :[ </3
-
Has anyone else noticed that $1 only 15 month norton subscribtion is actually $2?)

Current price on Envy 14 w/Radiance (one of the few reasons to get this notebook) configured like my three E14s - $1,910
Initial price of Envy 14 beats edition series (Radiance not currently available) - $1,770
This is what HP is probably hoping for people to see...the "final" price of the "new" one being $140 CHEAPER! But we all know if you add the hiked up Radiance display price it will be $2,070 (at least we think). Now that's $160 MORE and people don't like paying more.
The only thing I see as a plus is the replacement of Corel with Adobe. Too bad they didn't do that with all their lines. But who knows what version they're going to ship with and if it's going to be an LE of their already "lite" suite. They're currently on v8 and should be coming out with the next version this month or next and can be found for about $70 now.
I'm not sure about the headphones since I don't have any use for them but if the "beats" performance on the Envy 14 itself is any indicator, I'll pass on it. Guess you can buy those headsets for $200 and saving about $40 here if you really wanted them. What's wrong with this quote from this site?
First Look: HP Launches New Notebooks and Netbooks For The Holidays
"This special-edition notebook includes Beats Audio, a combination of audio processing and specific speakers developed by HP and Beats by Dr. Dre to provide the optimal sound experience when playing music or audio through headphones or external speakers."
Now is this something they got from HP and the doc himself or are they nicely saying the sound is better when not used with the included "special" speakers, which is true since they're really not impressive at all. This is especially true out of the box where the bulk of the users will live. Doing some tweaking with the EQ will gain you some dbs but it's not all that.
So now with the black. It would have been cool had it not been for the retarded 9, or is that a little b or is that a Target branded notebook? Then we move on to the nasty finger print magnet that shinny does so well.
BTW Jerry J., did you not have a "3D" movie to pop into the Envy 17 "3D"? More on the "3D" later. No, "3D" is garbage in your living room and now it will be more so on a notebook. Good luck watching with someone else on that little thing.
Back on beat...so now we have shinny all around the body. Wow we must bling the b-ed homey. So now they're adding plastic to cut cost and weight?
Is shiny plastic the answer to gaps, nicks, scuffs and fit and finish issues?
And now to the glowing red keyboard and random other areas kidz...wow how I wish I was an Alienware!

Hmmm configuring one of them says up to 3.75 hours of battery life and the article still states 6.5. Press releases anyone?Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -

The Envy 14 BE comes with a standard two year warranty! (not bad!)
btw... The Envy 14 says 3.75 hours and the Envy 14 BE says 6.5 hours...
Is something actually improved in this new Envy 14 BE to lengthen battery life? (also since the radiance display isn't included is it possible that is what might be saving it battery life?) -
AHHH, I want the Radience screen but $300 is outrageous! -
i still think the .5 is from the headphones as a package
-
Why didn't I pull the trigger when it was $1100 with radiance! AHH! -
no idea, just making guesses x) i dont see how they would add another .5 outta nowhere

maybe the target logo is made out of a coating of very heavy lead paint.
-
Other than the 3D aspect, is the Envy 17 3D screen in any way superior to the current Envy 17 screen offerings?

My wife ordered some Beats headphones as a joke and we just got them. Actually I was pleasantly surprised - the sound is great, they fold up nicely for transport and they have little buttons to control your music playback on your iPhone.
-
-
For the Envy 17 3D hopefully they finally added Blu-Ray burner, I am really crossing my fingers on this one. I would love to see a finger reader as well.
What is the estimated shipping for this one?? (besides fall and holiday season HP is currently states) -
Is the Envy 14 Beats Edition made out of metal as well? Because the top casing looks like plastic?
-
I think the lid is metal with a "coating".
...but I am not 100% sure... -
For example, here's a pic showing the DVD slot--doesn't look at all like chrome...

I'll find out in (hopefully less than) a couple of weeks. I'm buying that version because it's the only Envy Costco carries, and I only buy computers from Costco for the 90-day warranty. I'll be hoping it's not a tacky mess... -
when you buy it, could you take some pictures of it and maybe a quick review?

Alrighty, I received my Envy 14 Beats Edition this morning, much earlier than expected. Build date was supposed to be the 16th, but it got on the plane in Shanghai on the 11th. So, very excited.
I'll be posting an unboxing video later, and then reporting back with some kind of review. My initial thoughts: there is absolutely nothing cheesy about this notebook, for those who might be concerned about the chrome finish around the edges (as I was after seeing the pictures posted in the preview). It's actually a black chrome (metal) and is very, very classy. Even the Beats logo on the lid is more subdued than I thought.
The thing feels solid as a rock (and yes, a little heavy). It simply reeks of quality. Simply put, it's just a beautiful machine. -
can't wait for review and pictures mate. enjoy your machine!
-
Can't wait to see unboxing vid and pics, let us know!
-
Congrats on the new Beats Envy 14, can't wait for a review as well!

Also, if you can, tell us more about the display.
The Envy Beats Edition comes with the regular 1366x768 Brightview display, so it would be interesting to see if its as bad as people have been making it seem lately...
