i'm sending my laptop in to HP for a free motherboard replacement. does this procedure wipe out the hard drive?

i'm not getting any video...do i hook the laptop up to an external monitor to back up the files?

If your HP is under this technical bulletin, then the graphics card has failed, in which case you will not be able to get any picture (regardless of what monitor you use).

If you have a desktop with an SATA connection, you could plug in your 2.5" drive because the standards are the same. You could also hook up the 2.5" drive to an external SATA to USB enclosure to recover the files.

They shouldn't NEED to wipe the drive.
But... I've heard of lots and lots of cases where the drive is restored to a factory image when it's sent in, just so they "can be sure."
I would backup any data, and if you have the space, clone the disk so you can just deploy the clone to the drive when it comes back, and you'll be exactly where it was when you left.
