Hi Folks, I got my 8240 refurb about a month ago and right out of the box I knew something wasn't right about the color. It's just really washed out. It's like there's a color saturation button that's turned OFF! If I knew how to post a picture I'd post one that compares my desktop lcd to this one (not that I expect it to be as good as that but it's not even close).

Anyway, I tried adjusting every setting there is - ALS, gamma, contrast ... you name it. I sent it back to HP and they updated the bios, reseated cables and no difference. I sent the picture comparing the two displays and they said I should take it to an authorized repair person and they replaced the LCD and inverter board - absolutely no difference.

I still have the option to return it and so unless anyone has a magic bullet it'll have to go back because I have to have good display quality in order for it to be useful. I'm a landscape designer and I bought it so I can show people pictures of my work, pictures of plants, etc. and if the color is unrealistic it's no good to me.

Has anyone else had this problem or anything like it? I knew about the dimness issue going into it, and it is a bit dim but acceptable in most conditions. It's hard to imagine that these machines sell if all of them are like this but maybe I'm crazy.

Maybe I'll try another one because aside from that I really love it otherwise.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Did you turn of the light sensor then adjust the colors? Anyway, I am not quite sure what is wrong with your disply.

Yes, ALS = Ambient light sensor. And I've tried all the settings you can adjust in Display Properties/Settings/Advanced including all the colors, gamma, contrast, brightness, etc. Without a picture the best way I can describe it is that it's "washed out", there's no richness to the color, it looks faded like a pair of jeans that have lost half of their color compared to when they were new. Adjusting the gamma slider all the way to the left does the most to help it but it renders the screen with darkness issues.

I just figured out how to post a picture - I'll post a lower resolution one tonight.

If you said, you have replaced the LCD and made no difference. I suggest you take it back and replace it for a new one.
