First off, the most obvious question:
Why do HP ship a lot of new laptops with DDR333 when they are quite capable of running DDR400? I've read in a couple of places that it's cheaper for HP but I find that hard to believe since here in the Netherlands prices are about the same for 333 or 400. Maybe they just have a big stock of 333? Oh well, not all that important.

My real questions: I just got a HP Compaq nx6125 with 2x256 DDR333. I'm looking to upgrade to 1GB DDR400 and was wondering if I could just stick it in and it will run at 400? (I will take out the 333 first of course) Like it does on the v2000 and other models. I've also seen some models where the 166 mem bus seems to be locked in the bios and ddr400 still runs at 333. Can anyone confirm if this is the case for nx6125?

And then I need some recommendations on brand and type. I'm thinking of buying this one: Crucial CT12864X40B
I can get it at a shop in my hometown where I know they will kindly put it in to see if it works, no extra charge.

    Thnx in advance

Yes, it does support without any problems. That Crucial link you gave should work fine at DDR400 speed. Some people had problems with CAS 2.5 DDR400 memory, but this is CAS 3, so you should be fine with that crucial.

chinna_n, just the answers I was looking for. I've put the order in and it should be in the shop sometime this week. I'll report back with my findings.

Well I've got the new stick of mem but it's automatically set to 166, not 200. Too bad. Just the increase in size gives a nice boost though and at least I know I can use A64 tweaker to set it to 200 without any problems.

Remove the other 256MB PC2700 stick and your new memory will run at full speed.

Nope, I took out both the original sticks before I put the new one in, so that's not the issue. I've also tried resetting the bios to defaults but nothing. I'm running the newest bios, maybe an older one will take it?

Don't know, but I don't think it's worth downgrading BIOSes to find out. Strange, HP's consumer Turion lines (like my dv8000z) run PC3200 at full speed. I have two of the SODIMMs you bought.

Well, I thought maybe someone would know a bios that will run it. My laptop officially only supports ddr333 but since the sempron's memory controller supports 400 I figured it would work.

    Quick question...

Which would be better: One stick of 1GB 400 RAM or 1GB of 400 RAM with one of the stock 256MB RAM chips still in so you have the extra RAM but with both chips running at the lower speed?

    Just curious.

On a shared memory GPU machine, the single PC3200 stick is preferable. On a dedicated memory GPU machine... depends on what you're doing but I'd lean towards the single-stick configuration. As cheap as RAM is, buy two 1GB sticks. Problem solved :D.

That is strange, because I remember seeing people with DDR400 on this laptop on laptoplogic forum. Please checkout the forum once for any advise. Ofcourse we always have A64 Tweaker handy, but we would like to do it automatically.

    I also have the NX6125 with Turion ML-40 and 2x512 OCZ PC3200.
According to CPU-Z, my memory is only running at 156Mhz (CPU/14) instead of the 200Mhz it is design to work on. I also use A64Tweaker to force it to 200Mhz (CPU/11), but sometimes windows freezes on loading.
