Sorry, don't know anything about that model. Its more of a business model so you may not find too many people here that have even looked at it, and its too new for reviews much like the zv/zx5000 series. If you tell us what you want to do we can give a better idea as to what we think of the model based on the specs.
zx5000 :: 2.4M :: 512 DDR :: 40gb 4200 RPM HD :: 15.4" :: Radeon 9600 Mobilty M10 :: Aquamark3 21,862 -
I'm in Canada and I had the NX7000 model. Everything was about the same as the specs you listed except mine was a Pentium-M 1.6Ghz, 60GB HDD (4200rpm) & 1GB Ram (2x512MB). I liked the unit very much, especially the 15.4"WSXGA+ screen. Brighter than most other notebooks and very sharp. I found that the HDD at 4200rpm was VERY slow and made my system boot into XP even slower compared to my Toshiba P3-600.
+ Game play was pretty good. I played Rainbow Six 3: Ravenshield on it and worked pretty well after I dropped the settings a bit, kind of sluggish if you max out the graphics settings.
+ Sound quality was fairly impressive for such a thin unit. It was a lot louder than the Compaq Evo N800c unit that I tried. You could actually watch a DVD movie with friends in a fairly noisy room and still hear the sound properly.
+ The 15.4" WSXGA+ Screen, like I said was great, especially watching DVD movies in wide screen. Just some small (1cm) black bars on the top & bottom
+ Battery runtime was pretty impressive, it lasted over 3.5 hours surfing the web. I was also capable of getting over 2 hours playing Ravenshield or watching a DVD movie
But, now the bad points:
- The CDRW doesn't burn at a full 24X or 16X, it starts out at 8x after a few minuties, it just to 10x, etc... until it reaches full speed near the end of the burn. This is called Zoned-CLV, which is a stepped burning speeds at specific points of the disc. a 24X burn should only take approx. 4mins, but this drive burns it in approx. 6-10mins. It also depends on the discs that you use, big brand name companies burn faster than noname brands.
- 4200 RPM HDD is too slow, you may want to get a 5400RPM drive instead it will make your system run faster.
- Power connector is on the right side of the unit, not located on the back where every other manufacturer places it. Sometimes it gets in the way of your external usb mouse.
- This is a doozy. if you set you power management setting to Always on rather than Portable/Laptop (so the CPU always runs at full speed rather than automatically jumping to full speed when your system needs it), the system I had buzzed on the upper right corner constantly. If you're at home using this in a quiet room, it will drive you insane. I was not provided with a satisfactory solution, so I returned the unit.
Other than that last minus in my list, this was a great system and I would have kept it to this day. I would definately recommend that you check the unit about the buzzing noise before you buy, unless you don't plan to change the power management settings.
I hope this info helps you make a decision.

Hi vb,
thanks for that extensive reply...the 4200 rpm HDD is starting to worry me, actually. But I hope it doesn't slow down the machine that much. I say this, cuz I've already ordered it.
What other games could you play on it without mayor distortions?
thanx.
------------------------------------------------
You are learning all your life and you die stupid. -
btw, VB, did you notice any low building quality on the laptop, especially as fas as the plastic mouse buttons are concerned?
oh, and the sound isn't very good either, is it?
------------------------------------------------
You are learning all your life and you die stupid. -
I wouldn't worry about the HD speed too much, the 5400 isn't that much faster than a 4200 and it requires more power to spin at those higher speeds. Also, I have a 4200rpm HD and I can play games on it with no problems, it may take a few seconds longer to load (i.e. 12 seconds to load Aquamark as opposed to about 5 on my desktop with 2 80gb 7200 rpm drives in a raid configuation), but after its loaded it runs fine.
zx5000 :: 2.4M :: 512 DDR :: 40gb 4200 RPM HD :: 15.4" :: Radeon 9600 Mobilty M10 :: Aquamark3 21,862 -
Well, I also tried Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, but that didn't work that well, a lot of corrupt textures, the game seems to require a non-Mobility version of the ATI 9200 series and up. Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force 2 ran ok with the settings lowered. What type of games are you planning to play on the system (First Person Shooters, RPG, SIMs, etc...)?
The build quality on the unit was very good. The mouse buttons were solid without feeling weak/loose or too stiff. The glide pad was also pretty good and tracked well, but I would still recommend an external mouse if you plan on playing FPS games.
The sound was fairly impressive in such a small package. You obviously don't get the bass as you would from larger speakers, but I could play Ravenshield and I could hear everything, including the footsteps of the enemy.
I did a bit of research on the 5400RPM drives and found some articles and tests on the below website.
http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20031031/
http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20030813/index.html
Quikster is right, the 5400rpm drives do use more power, but it's balanced out by the fact that it now takes less time to load the programs, but overall, you will lose a few minutes of battery power by getting a 5400RPM drive.
I'm pretty sure you're gonna be happy with this unit. I would personally rate this unit an 8 out of 10.
-Vb- -
On the 4200 rpm drive I can play Counter-strike at 99 fps, and Splinter Cell: Pandora's Tomorrow at full settings.
zx5000 :: 2.4M :: 512 DDR :: 40gb 4200 RPM HD :: 15.4" :: Radeon 9600 Mobilty M10 :: Aquamark3 21,862 -
thanks, vb and Quikster. why do you speak of this model as something you had in the past "i'm in canada an i had this model". I hope nothing went wrong and you had to change it?
and, btw, i plan on playing mainly adventrue and RPG games, some strategies and sometimes first person shooters ,like Call of Duty. I guess the latter one will not go, though.
So what is the most important thing when playing games: HDD speed, Video card, the processor or RAM?
P.S:It is really hard to find a review of this model on the internet.(except on cnet.com).
------------------------------------------------
You are learning all your life and you die stupid. -
Quikster, I didn't mean to imply that the game will play slow, I was just saying that programs/games will execute faster with a 5400rpm drive than they do with the 4200rpm drives. I personally found that my 5400rpm notebook drive boots into Windows XP faster than the 4200rpm drive that I initially had.
Quesoyyo, I used to have the NX7000. I returned it recently because of a buzzing noise that just wouldn't go away. I listed this on my "Minus" list, the last item. HP couldn't provide a satisfactory solution so I decided to return the unit rather than have that buzzing noise bother me.
Call of Duty should work fine on this system, you may have to lower the settings to play.
I personally think the most important factor for a game to play well is all the items you listed, maybe except for the HDD. You need a fast/powerful video card/video memory to provide better and more textures, a fast CPU to be able to handle all the processes and enough memory so that the system doesn't have to swap out to the HDD for additional memory, in the event that it does, you would then need a fast HDD. In otherwords, you need a good balance of each to have a great system to play games or do apps.
Reviews for this unit is very hard to find. You may want to try looking for a Compaq Presario X1000 series notebook reviews, they're technically the same unit. I also found a link to PCWorld where they also did a small review on the NX7000.
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,112692,00.asp -
Does anybody know how long the HP Compaq nx7010 has been on the market? I know the nx7000 was first released in September 2003, but, according to what I have read, the nx7010 is much newer, however I do not know HOW MUCH newer.
------------------------------------------------
You are learning all your life and you die stupid. -
Well, when I originally got the NX7000, it was released approx. July-August 2003, I had to wait 3 weeks for delivery & I got mine in September. The NX7010 I believe just came out within that last month. Here's the link to the Canadian HP site:
http://www.hp.ca/products/static/notebooks/nx7010/index.php
They seem to have made some changes from the NX7000. They have 2 CPU choices now, either a PM-1.5 or 1.7, added a b/g network card and dropped the LCD to a WXGA from a WSXGA+, otherwise, I think they're the exact same unit (according to the HP Canada website). -
Oh, and to the moderator of this forum I just have one more little petition:
Could you please change the pic of the nx7000 series, as the one I have selected is not right (it shows the nc6000 intead of the nx7000).
Thank you
------------------------------------------------
You are learning all your life and you die stupid. -
So, according to your reflectios, the boot up time of a game (or any other programme) will be faster with a 5400 rpm HDD. But does this significantly affect the course of the game? Will it go slower? Or is it just the videocard and memory that plays a role once the programme has been loaded?
Thanks for your replies.
paco.

After struggling with the vendors for three hours, since there was trouble in finding the Bluetooth module on this machine, it turned out that no drivers were installed at all, which is why Bluetooth wasn't working...well, let's go on to a rough little review (siince I have had this model for a day only.):
-Great screen (although it appears fuzzy at a lower resolution than 1680x1050). it is very bright
-the best thing is the silence (you can just sit and enjoy the sound of silence). The machine runs soooo smoothly...i cannot hear it AT ALL. I am glad I opted for a centrino.
- Sound quallity is decent (=pretty good). The only thing I regret is a subwoofer. The sound is very loud and clear. However, there is almost no bass. Even if you increase it with Windows Media Player (truebass it's called, i think), there is no difference except it sounds overdriven. However, the loudness is pretty good for a laptop. Since the bass is almost null, if you increase the volume to the maximum, it remains clear and loud.
- The processor is ok, actually, I was expecting something more, since my desktop is a P4 1.7 Ghz with 512 RIMM RAM and runs at the same speed almost.
- Keyboard: a bit too soft, but I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it. The touchpad is great, you can turn it off if you're using an external USB mouse, which is pretty neat.
- Battery life: don't know yet. It is the first time I'm running it on battery. I've been running it for about 1 hour 10 minutes and it shows that 67% is left (2:14). Isn't this kinda low??? Or is it just because it is the first time? I am listening to music and surfing the net. That's the only thing I have done.
- Cd drive is the only thing I can hear, and I guess it runs just fine.
- The AC adaptor is on the right (I hate that!), which makes it quite incomfortable sometimes.
-Three USB ports are on the back...hmmm...kind of a hassle if you want to use a USB Flash disk. At least one port on the sides would have made it a great laptop.
- I have tried firewire. I wanted to connect an external HDD of a friend of mine, but it just recognised it as something I wanted to extract from the computer. Don't know why. It recognized the device, but I could not access it. It just showed a little icon on the bar, saying that I could remove the device safely (!!!). Does anybody know if I need a driver for the device or is it the Firewire port?
-SD Card reader is great. No probs with that. Recognizes it instantly.
- IR port works fine too, have tried connecting it with my mobile. No problems
- Graphics: No idea. haven't run any games yet....but I can assure that watching DVD's on it is a delight, only when using WinDVD. it shows it full screen. However, when using Windows media Player, it was just a square in the middle of the screen with about 3cm thick black lines on the sides. And it was a Widescreen DVD. Does anybody know why?
-That's all i can say at the moment. I haven't tried WIFi since we don't have this "Hi tech" in Kazakhstan yet.
I'd be grateful if you could answer my questions.
P.S: Microsoft Office did NOT come with the computer! Is this normal? Or am I supposed to buy it apart?
Thanks.

Hey Quesoyyo,
Congratulations on your new notebook. From your review, it sounds you're happy with your purchase, which I thought you would be since I owned a similar unit. Just to answer a few of your questions/concerns:
- If this is the first time you're running the battery, I've heard that you will get slightly lower runtimes, you'll have to charge fully & deplete fully at least 3-4 times to reach peak performance from the battery. Also, if you're playing audio CD's & surfing while running on battery, it will drain it faster. Dropping the LCD brightness will help increase runtimes. I have also heard from HP's tech support that the battery meter is not very acurate in windows. I was only capable of getting a bit over 3 hours on a single charge.
- On a previous post regarding 5400RPM HDD's and game play, the speed of the HDD will not affect how fast the game plays after loading, that would be the CPU, Ram & Graphics card/memory
- I've never used any Firewire products, but from my understanding it should be plug & play. The OS has the drivers installed by default, unless the system needs addtional files to get it to work, usually the OS will ask you for the XP CD, just point it to C:I386 and it should be fine, otherwise, I recommend contacting HP's tech support since it's free.
- The problem you're having with DVD's may be an issue with Media Player. I think I had a similar issue playing widescreen video files on my desktop using media player, but I could be wrong.
- A notebook is rarely a match for a desktop since especially with RIMM memory, I think it has an 800Mhz FSB, the notebook only has a 400Mhz FSB, plus notebooks are rarely a match for a desktop IMO.
- Microsoft Office does not come with any of the HP/Compaq computers unless it was selected in the options during purchase, so you'd have to pay for any Office software.
-Vb- -
Despite popular belief draining the battery and recharging several times will NOT help at all. All new battery's are Lithium ion batteries and they do not have a memory thus "conditioning" the battery wont do any good.
zx5000 :: 2.4M :: 512 DDR :: 40gb 4200 RPM HD :: 15.4" :: Radeon 9600 Mobilty M10 :: Aquamark3 21,862 -
That's what I was told by HP support when I mentioned that my runtime was not achieving the 5hrs rated on their specs (probably didn't know whatelse to say). Plus, I beleive it's also listed in one of the manuals I quickly skimmed through.
-
another little criticism of this laptop: The battery life is a little bit more than 3 hours! And I only surf the net without downloading any stuff listening to music recorded in Windows Media Player (without using and Audio Cd). The volume is very low, since I'm in a library. Why is the battery life so short? plus the screen is a little bit dimmed...and btw, is $2000 a reasonable price for this notebook in the west?

hello again,
just one more problem. I got this laptop 2 days ago, (HP nx7010) and when I boot up windows it shows the desktop with all icons workin (that is, not frozen) but when I click on them they don't work. I have to wait about 40 seconds till I actually hear a boot up sound (the famous XP sound) and THEN all programs and icons start working. Does anybody know why this happens? might this be due to one of the background programs that boot up automatically with windows?
Thank you.

Listening to music unless its streaming is using a lot of power do to the constant spinning of the cd/hd. This will drastically cut your battery life, the best thing to do listening to music is finding a good internet radio.
zx5000 :: 2.4M :: 512 DDR :: 40gb 4200 RPM HD :: 15.4" :: Radeon 9600 Mobilty M10 :: Aquamark3 21,862 -
A bit over 3 hours was the limit I got from my NX7000. Personally, I think the only way to get 5hrs as advertised is on testing sotware, not in practical use. 3.5hrs will probably be your limit for the battery.
Regarding the Bootup issue, I believe the system is loading other drivers/resources in the background before it gets to the sound driver. You may want to see if the XP sound plays 40 seconds after the little speaker appears at the bottom right corner. I know that the HP systems have a lot of junk installed that get loaded in the background. -
Just turn of windows power management for the 4 usb devices listed in device manager and your sorted, no more buzzing noise. Hmmm big mistake taking this beast back.

Haha...ehem...i feel sorry for you, Venombite...conisdering to buy the nx7010? No doubt! go for it! it is a perfect machine and I'm really plesaed with it. (unless you are a game freak!
)
I really wish the speakers had lower basses. If you play The X-Exutioners or something like that only the higher frequencies are audible. Is there any way I can increase the bass? The loudness is ok (actually pretty good considering the size of the speakers and that half the right one is covered with buttons). Btw, the speakers get really hot when turning the loudness to maximum? Will they brake if I keep playing music loudly?
So, the only minus of this model is the lack of a subwoofer...HP should really consider this....
P.S: Watching movies on this machine is GREAT!

Hey, I just ordered the zt3000 last week. I'm still waiting for it to ship, but I can answer some questions from other forums I have read. Let me first say that you should definately check out the site http://www.x1000forums.com. They have lots of useful info about this machine and the zt3000/x1000. I visit there almost daily. Anyway, it is not impossible to increase the bass, but I definately wouldn't do that. The speakers are very sensitive to low frequencies and I have read about people blowing them out by using a Soundmax hack to enable the sliders. Also, I have read that you should be careful with in program adjustments as well like the WOW effects in WMP and the Equilizer in Winamp. I wouldn't worry too much about the loudness (i really didn't read this anywhere) except with respect to the bass and other settings. From my experience, the louder you play a speaker, the quicker they start to deteriorate anyway. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but at the same time be cautious of how much high and low end you put through them. For the best sound, you should look into headphones or external speakers. I will find out soon enough what the speakers sound like, but just trying to add some insight. One thing that I have read about is that the wired network card in that notebook and the zt3000/x1000 is very buggy. It should work fine for normal use (if i understand correctly), but it will die and need to reboot the computer if you try to make too many simultaneous connections with it. Programs that tend to have problems are Bittorrent, eDonkey2000 (and varients), PCAnywhere, and some VNC clients. I'm hoping that this was on older models, but if you check out the technical issues of the site above, you will notice that people have not found a solution yet.

Quesoyyo, I'm glad to hear that you love this unit. As I posted previously, I used to have the NX7000 & I thought it was also a great unit other than the buzzing and a few other minor things. The new NX7010 is faster and cheaper than what I paid for the NX7000 which is great, but the only screen option available in Canada is the standard WXGA @1280x800, not enough desktop real estate. Also, I wish they had the ATI 9600 option and 5400rpm HDD options available. I'm probably gonna hold off for a bit and see what other new notebooks come out, I'm also considering other manufacturers as well. Sony is p[lanning on coming out with a 17" Wide Screen model that looks pretty thin with lots of features.
