I'm interested in buying a HP Compaq nx7400, but I'm worried if it will be able to
be upgraded to Windows Vista when that arrives.
According to a thread I read in the Notebook Dummy Guide Articles forum entitled "Notebook Video Graphics Card Guide 2006", the nx7400's integrated graphics card won't be able to run Aero Glass.
Should I just forget the nx7400 and get a nc8430 instead? I initially wanted a nx7400 because it seems smaller overall (talking about size, not weight) than the nc8430. Any suggestions?

Nonsense!
The nx7400's integrated graphics card will run Aero Glass. That document is incorrect.
Many ATI or nVidia fanbois will tell you that it sucks, but it my experience it works fine -
Depends on what you want. The bare minimum for Aero or something better. If all you will be doing is surfing the web, word etc. then the GMA 950 is fine. Anything more 3D intensive get a better graphics card.

I have windows vista installed on my nx7400 and can tell you it runs fine and the transitions are as smooth as my desktop/6800gt.

I'm curious...I've only seen the GMA 900 in person...it can't do Aero and it definitely lagged with Beta 2. -
If by Aero you mean the gui it's flawless; the transition between windows is smooth and transparency works perfectly, like I say there is no difference between the 950 and the 6800gt on my desktop... for games thats another story, although I've yet to try it out.
FYI Aero on beta was incomplete and stuttered on most systems. Multiple windows are down to the RAM, the graphic card just displays them. I bought this machine for graphic and web design so a powerful graphics card wasn't needed.
EDIT: Just realised you wrote the review which led to my purchase of the nx7400... a little weird I know chosing it over the nc8430 but it is very similar minus the graphic card, fingerprint scanner and a couple of other features I personally didn't need. Thank you. -
Hey...it's all good! Anyway, Aero would allow you to do the flip-3D thing, view little thumbnails of your windows from the Start Bar, and do a few (somewhat hard to notice) animations on windows when you min/max one of 'em.
Mostly not too useful in terms of functionality (except for the thumbnail stuff), but I was still concerned given that the desktop is now all rendered in 3D.
