Hi, I have a question for all users of hp notebooks, do you feel the vibration from hdd under your hands while typing?
First drive which came with the nx7400 (hitachi 5k100 100GB) was vibrating so much that my hands were becoming numb after half an hour  . I change it to Seagate Momentus 5400.3 100GB drive and the vibration is now barely to feel... BUT from time to time the vibration strengthen :( , then after some time I cannot even feel the drive is spinning  . I have also nx6110 which chassis is completely still - no vibration at all.
Is it possible that hard drive could change (modulate) the spinning speed? So I can feel the change in strength of vibration?
The fan doesn't work (I have constant 45-47C during browsing and word processing - core2duo T5600 undervolted to 0,95V).

I work with notebook +12 hours/day and this vibration is very annoying... Thanks for any discussion on this problem.

Yes, the hard disk spins up and slows the platter, depending on what the load put onto it is. So, if you are srarting the computer up, there will probably be quite a but of vibrating, since quite a load is placed on the hard disk. Faster hard disks may vibrate more, but it also depends on the manufacturer. Seagate and Hitachi are hard disk makers that build performance disks, whereas Samsung and Fujitsu build slower hard disks, but they are quiter, and probably vibrate less. if your still under warranty, then you may be able to get HP to replace your current hard disk with one that vibrates less, but since there is nothing wrong with the current hard disk, they may not.

Thanx for the answer but is it happens to your Amilo too? Maybe it's only the nx7400 chassis that has tendency to transfer excessive vibration or maybe some dampening isolation is missing in the hard drive bay.
It's my first notebook with 5400 rpm drive and maybe I'm just exaggerating things... on the other hand I don't have time for going round the shops, "feeling" every HP I find... Some user opinions might help fighting my little phobia about vibration...I don't want to change the hdd for the second time, only to learn it is hopeless.

It doesn't vibrate when I'm just working on a few Internet Explorer pages, and a few documents, but under a load it does vibrate for a brief amount of time, when at the immediate start of powering on. Otherwise, there is practically no vibrating, excpet when I play a game and it needs to load.

if I may, can I suggest you look around on the computer which programs are installed. Programs that are associated with the hard disk will create this problem, as will a lack or sufficient RAM. You should be able to check your RAm usage in Task Manager.

I have 2GB of RAM...and I can feel vibration even when the hard drive is complete idle (no blinking, no running programs). I even started to mess with power management in NHC (it helps to stop tickling of some drives esp. Hitachi) but I haven't noticed any change.
