Hello all. I just received a Compaq nx9420. I booted up and....nothing! The screen fails to come on. All I get is a black screen with the music from the recovery disk wizard playing in the background. An external monitor shows a pattern of flickering colors. Arghh!
Tech Support says I have to mail it back for repairs. So much for spending the extra money for the reliability of a business model. My guess is something shook loose during shipment.
Would it be better to ask for a replacement rather than getting it repaired?

If I were you, I would definitely return it. It does not worth to send it back for repair. Just get refund and re-order.. Good luck.

Not sure how the system works where you come from but ovber here you should be able to get a replacement for an item shipped faulty. I'd return it straight away and get a replacement!

Excellent advice. I am proceeding with the replacement. At least the HP business support staff has been excellent to date.
Thanks for the replies. -
From what you described it sounds like the video card isn't soldered on to the motherboard correctly, or a connection between the two did shake loose during the shipment.
Regardless of the problem though, either the motherboard/GPU needs to be replaced or the whole computer does. HP does have a policy to repair units less than either 21 days or 30 days old with only brand new parts AFAIK.
Nice to hear the business support is good though...I haven't had a reason (knock on wood) to call them up about a serious issue yet. -
The nx9420 doesn't have a card that is soldered on. It's a removable one. MXM or not, we were wondering months ago...
We still don't know -
If that is the case, then the nc8430 might be MXM as well. I'd love that...good for when DX10 cards come out and they perfect that tech.

no offense but i dont like compaq

Then what u like?

Well, I'm posting this from my new nx9420. HP mailed me a replacement (overnight) and told me to mail back the old one within 30 days. Overall, HP was excellent to deal with.
I love the 1680 x 1050 screen now that I've increased the Windows font size. No need for dual monitors anymore! -
pflieger,
During your return window run some "burn-in" programs on the machine and give it a good workout.
Burn-in =Stress testing..
