It means the hard drive sensed movement and parked itself in order to avoid damage. It is neither bad nor good but try to avoid movements that make it go orange. :)

Does it stay orange? Or is it only temporary?

Usually, it turns orange, which means exactly what dannyres says, to avoid HD damage...usually just walking with the laptop on does this...or certain movements...no big deal...its there for protection.

Basically any sudden movement will cause this :)

I have a new dv5t and am running Vista Home Premium. I have my laptop set to sleep when the lid is closed. My hard drive light also turns orange occasionally when I shut the lid, and there is NO MOVEMENT AT ALL. It only lasts 5 - 10 seconds, but sometimes there is a "clunking" sound that accompanies the orange light -- the same sound that emits when some hardware has been disconnected. Can anyone explain?

The clunk or click sound is when the heads of the hard drive park itself to protect it from scratching the data platter.

shutting the lid can move your notebook also. every acceleration that is not within limits will be interpreted as a potential risk for the hdd.

Hey flipfire and schoko, thanks for responding. And thanks for the good info. I'm relieved to know that the occasional orange light and clunking sounds are not signs of impending doom. . . this is a replacement laptop for a dv5t that was doomed, so it's good to know that this laptop is okay.
