Jut ordered a DV1000 via staples Build to order. They have a decent (I know, there are always better deals but I couldn't wait any more) deals at the in-store kisoks. I got it w/ :
brightview
1.73/740 processor
1 stick 512
60g 5400
broadcom wireless
8x DVD (will upgrade to a slotloading DVD burner for ~ same price as they wanted for burner upgrade and still have a spare left over)
XP home (I have a new copy of pro to install)
free second 6-cell
crappy intel graphics but I don't game at all
Remote
Earbuds
for $795 including tax less $50 rebate, so $745. Again, I'm pretty OK with the deal.
Here are my questions:
1) I couldn't get the broadcom card with BT -- it was only an option with the intel wireless which most everyone here warned me away from. Can I get a BT module? The intel with wireless was another $35, so I figure I can just put that $35 into a USB BT dongle when needed, but it would be nice to have it built in (less chance of getting broken off when using in car, etc). Anyone know where to get the module?
2) I want another stick of RAM -- either 512 or 1gig if I get a deal. What do I want? I was originally looking at the compaq v2000z and got confused by all the memory issues. I think the intel chip is more straightforward, but I'd love a pointer to memory (especially if it's something I can get a deal on) that works.
Thanks for the great forum!

(fyi, the info on the deal is over at Fatwallet in the hotdeals forum: just search for staples bto).

Wow, you got a great deal! I just configured a DV1000 with the exact same specs on HP's website, and the price was $974.59 including the academic discount.

Thanks rahulnirmal-- I'm always looking for help justifing my purchases. It's good ammo when the VISA bill comes! ;-)
I was lookin' at the academic pricing, too. Boy was I wavering. That was just a little too much, so then I decided to jump on the low-end of the office depot v2000z deal (sempron 3000+, 40 gig hard drive 256, etc for about $450 after a whole bunch of confusing rebates. I'd then do about $200 in upgrades. This one for $750 after only one rebate is much better for me.
I did a little more research and it looks like no-go on my bluetooth question (but tell me if I'm wrong), however I'm hoping someone can guide me to some RAM.
Thanks! -
hi there,
can you please tell me how you managed to come up with that price? perhaps i'm missing something, or it was a sale that ended yesterday, but i just don't see the dv1000 configurd through the staples site for less than $1000, plus $75 shipping (are they shipping same-day and packing in diamonds or something?)
i'd give serious consideration to getting one like yours if i could just figure out how!
thanks so much,
K- -
You have to do it in store... that's where you get the $250 in instant rebates, and $50 in mail in. See the fatwallet pointer in my first post for details. Good luck (oh, and it helps the have a friendly manager that will take a coupon.

I was also confused at why the savings wouldn't show up at their site. Turns out that this offer is in-store only. They give you the discounts at the register, so I've heard. Awesome deal, I'm seeing lots of people getting their DV1000's from Staples right now.
The wireless card is removable you know. You can always remove the Broadcom card and get a wireless card with bluetooth, like from Intel. I don't think the bluetooth and wireless card are separate, I think they are both part of the same card.
You can always get an external USB bluetooth adaptor you know.
Hey, check out the DV1000 forums at www.dv1000forums.com, they can help you out with all of your issues.
Actually, I found a thread there about installing bluetooth yourself with pictures. Here ya go.

Hi everyone I'm new here and I too am about to order a dv1000 through Staples.
The configuration is:
Intel Pentium M 1.73 GHz
Windows XP Pro
FREE Upgrade to 14.0" WXGA BrightView Widescreen
512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
60 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG & Bluetooth(TM)
FREE Second 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Office 2003 Basic
Earbud Headphones with In-Line Volume Control
HP Mobile Remote Control
Price on HP.com with APP and $50 rebate= $1282.91 which is within 1 dollar of the price at Staples.
Staples price= $1281.00 - $250 Instant Rebate - $50 MIR= $981+Tax
I think this is a good price. What do you guys think? Can I do any better?
I have a couple questions.
Would it be worth it to get the 1.86 GHz 750 Processor?
Also, with me buying through Staples is it possible for me to call up HP and have them add the 1 year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan?
Would it still cost $99 or would it cost more?
Can I send the notebook back to HP if there are issues with it or do I have to go through Staples?
Thanks -
This Staples price IS a really good deal. I was there today and had one configured to my liking. With the $250 discount then the $50 HP rebate, and even paying WA sales tax, it came out cheaper than the price I got on HPShopping.com, even including my EPP (Employee Purchase Plan) discount. (my company gets an employee discount). I pay shipping at Staples ($75) and it's free with EPP online, but Staples price still comes out cheaper. And as an added freebie, Staples has a single 512MB memory stick instead of 2 x 256M.
Regarding the warranty...whether you buy it from Staples or HP, it's a mail-it-back warranty to HP. However, Staples has their own extended protection plans too, which I assume you return to them.
I'm replacing a DV1000 I bought last year that got ripped off last week. I liked it so much I'm replacing it with another. They did offer me the $99 one-year warranty extension after my original purchase, so you can always add it later. -
Why are you buying another DV1000 again?
-
Because it's a great machine and I loved it, and I'd still love it if it hadn't gotten ripped off.
I want the 14" widescreen bright monitor, and I want the QuickPlay feature. I will hurl myself in front of a steamroller before I buy a Dell (long story, don't ask, worst customer service in the WORLD); I won't overpay for a Sony name, and I won't buy a Toshiba either (used 'em at work).
I haven't found anything else that has everything I want for $1000. (what I want is a Centrino, 5400 rpm hard drive, bluetooth, quickplay, 512M of memory, and 14" widescreen bright display). What else is there? I haven't found it. I used this machine for almost a year and I loved it.
