Hmmm. Have you tried a temp viewer? Maybe you can see if it is spiking and try to narrow down a source. I use a notebook cooler from antec and have the fans positioned on the cpu and memory vents and my fan hasn't come on in 2 months. When I took it off a few days ago and took the laptop with me it came on about 30 minutes.

Try using compressed air to clean the vents (if you haven't done that lately) and undervolting you CPU. For a comprehensive guide, refer to this

Well if you have cleaned the vents and nothing is blocking the airflow then it appears one of your components is faulty. You need to check the temps to see if its actually overheating or just a general fault. My old Dell had this problem right outta the box, shut down randomly, had to get it replaced.

if temps are ok then it could be a power fault or that the shutdown threshold is being reached regardless of the temps, such a fault will cause the laptop to power off randomly

If the fan works OK, then I'm 99% sure it's the vents. You've no idea how much dust those can hold!
Use mobilemeter to get temp readings for you notebook (core temp won't work, NHC is an overkill for temp monitoring)
