I just bought some RAM for my mums desktop, she wanted me to double it, I knew it had 256mb so I bought a 256mb stick, but the trouble is I've just realised that it may have 2 x 128mb.
Does anyone know if it's likely to have:-
1 x 256mb and an empty slot
or
2 x 128mb
Thanks In Advance

Desktops should have four slots. If she only has two, then yes I'm expecting 2x128MB.
If you add a third stick and it does not boot (some computers need matching pairs, with the older ones being more likely) try just replacing a single 128MB with your 256MB. You may need to purchase another 256MB (512MB of RAM would really help anyway). -
If it came stock from the manufacturer, it probably has 2 x 128MB of ram. You can purchase a 512mb stick on eBay for like 15 bucks.
Make sure you get the right stick though. Memory comes in several different variations.
Download this program (Everest home 2.20): http://www.filehippo.com/download_everest_home/
It will tell you not only the type of ram but of the actual arrangement inside of the PC. -
thanks for your help
crucial said it had 2 memory slots so...
probably need to order another 256mb stick.
IF she has 4 slots would
256
128
128
empty
or
256
256
128
128
work at all?
TIA again
