    Hello,
my girlfriend's pavilion dv1000 is getting so overheated till it just shutdowns when it gets dangerously hot. It has a celeron M 307 processor (1.5gz) which is quite crappy since it doesnt have speedstep or something similar so the cooler fan kicks in every 10 minutes, even when its idle, and usually starts when the temperature is between 55C and 60C and lasts 30 seconds. The problem is that now sometimes the fan doesnt start at all. Sometimes the laptop is on for hours working correctly till the fan decides not to start and the temperature keeps raising.
I dont know if the cooler is failing since when its starts it does its job, the problem is that sometimes doesnt starts. Any thoughs on this? The cooler should kick in every 10 minutes or so? anyone with this laptop had a similar problem?

you should see if there is a BIOS upgrade to better control the fans

I flashed version F21 (btw the notebook is based on the dv1000 but its actually the dv1351la) and didnt made any diference. I timed the time it stays without the cooler running: 3 minutes, then the fan runs for 40 seconds. I dont know if thats normal even for this procesor. Poor air flow could cause this? maybe too much dust?

I have BIOS version F22 in my DV1411se. I replaced the original Celeron CPU with a 1.8 GHz Pentium M. I don't recall if the original CPU caused the fan to kick in every few minutes, but right now I've been on the computer for about 45 minutes and the fan hasn't come on since I turned the computer on.

Check the fins at the vent for dust. The fan may also have dust jamming it, although that would take quite a bit of dust. Does the fan sound normal when it runs? If the fins and the fan have never been cleaned, it would probably be a good idea to open up the computer and do so. If you need instructions on opening the computer, the service manual can be found on HP's website.
