Try shutting it down, removing the power cord and battery, then holding the power button for 10 seconds to remove any power left in the capacitors. Also hit the quick play buttons. Then put the battery back in and try. If that doesnt work, its probably a driver problem or a faulty connection.

have you tried taking it apart? You can view the instructional video online here
    http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plmcontent/NACSC/SML/

After you click product services in section 3, make sure you click FRU Remove and Replace. There will be a series of videos to watch. Simply click on the topic you wish to view. In this case the keyboard; they will show you how you can dismantle the keyboard from the notebook. If you should dismantle it, make you sure to check all the connection lines and wires are all connected properly. If the wires are connected, and the problem still persists, then perhaps calling HP and asking them about alternative solutions should be considered as a viable option.

    SOLVED.

Thanks to DMANblues[..]. I made the battery empty, then removed it, put it in again and then voila.

    Lo and behold, it works!

My sister's got a HP Pavilion dv2610ca, barely 2 months old, and the keyboard and touchpad just stopped working out of the blue. I plugged in a USB mouse and used Windows Accessibility On-screen Keyboard to work through it temporarily. Device Manager didn't report any problem with the keyboard drivers, but the Alps Touchpad driver seemed to be having problems.

The quickplay buttons were lit, and would even make their usual *bump* noise when touched, but no action! The "Q" or "DVD" quickplay button worked, oddly enough, launching the HP Quickplay application. Even the quickplay lights were lit, and if I mute the speaker with the mouse, the "mute" quickplay button would change from blue to orange.

But DMANbluesfreak, your solution really helped!!! Keyboard and touchpad are working fine now! I don't know what the deal is, but this seems like a serious shortcoming in the hardware. I just hope it doesn't escalate to something more serious until the warranty's gone, and there's no hope of fixing it.

If more people report this problem, maybe we can get HP to fix this problem permanently. I registered on this forum just to share my experience, and hope it'll help others.

I second that. It indeed DOES work!

My inlaws used the laptop for all of 10 seconds, and had the unfortunate luck of it happening during their usage. They felt horrible, thinking they broke the laptop... I, on the other hand, immediately blamed Vista, mother of all trouble. Even though this is primarily an HP problem, I'm sure Vista is somehow involved.. it always is!

I've never read a forum post and had it depict EXACTLY what was occuring to my laptop. Touchpad/keyboard not working, quickplay lights still lit, Mute still going to orange, sounds on quickplay buttons still making their sound ... it was bizzare!

I had uninstalled every conceivable HID, and let Vista re-install them, all to no avail. I unplugged, shutdown, and let my laptop sit, but without taking out the battery. Re-installed drivers, both old and new. Nothing seemed to work.

5min after running into this forum, problem was solved. Thanks DMANbluesfreak!! My inlaws thank you too!! Last thing my mother-in-law wanted to remember her 60th birthday for was breaking her sons laptop :)

    Thanks!

Thank's so much! The advice that you guys gave was spot on. I don't know much about laptops and my girlfriend was VERY upset when her HP laptop's touchpad and keyboard went completely dead!

I followed the very simple step-by-step approach and crossed my fingers. And PRESTO! It's like there was never a problem. Really thankful that you guys have this troubleshoot as it saved us from having to take yet ANOTHER trip back to BestBuy with an HP laptop.

    Best Regards

    To: DMANbluesfreak

I will NEVER be able to thank you enough for solving my SECOND keyboard death! The first time happened in February and after three weeks of HP doing who knows what, they gave me a new computer. Keyboard died again yesterday and I thought I would have to deal with the inept HP technicians again. Thanks to your directions, which I followed explicitly, all works beautifully now.

I think HP should put you on the payroll -- you are infinitely wiser than anyone I have ever talked with at HP.

Also, thank heavens for this web site which I just happened across this morning. Keep up the great work, PLEASE :)

    Thank you again :)

Thanks, DMANbluesfreak! My dv2745se keyboard and mouse stopped responding while I was working on a term paper that's due Monday. HP's website was no help. I tried your suggestion and it worked like a charm.
