Can anyone give me an opinion on the differences on these two processors, pentium 4 3. 20 GHz vs AMD Athlon 64 3400...which will give me the best performance for the money?

The two might actually be very similar but the AMD will have an 64 bit proc. that could lead to better performance, depending on what you are using it for.

Intel's chip burns much more power, lacks Enhanced Virus Protection and 64-bit capability, performs slower, and then there's the Intel marketing tax. AMD wins, no contest.

WinXP 64-bit RC1 is out. I haven't managed to snag a copy yet. I'll probably wait until RC2 or so, if not Final.

The AMD 64 is definitly the best in every way. Better on battery, better for less heat, more powerful, less money, 64bit ready, wins in 90% of benchmarks. I wish I had that chip, I had to go with intel to get a decent video card [V]

Hang on there for a sec. Just like everyone else is saying, it is also my belief that the Athlon 64 is the better processor. But it is not the only thing in a notebook. Like DaGeek says, he had to go with Intel to get a better graphics solution (at least, through HP).

For example, it is one of those ironies that AMD will play games better than the equivalent P4 almost every time, but the best graphics solutions (ATI X600, Go 6800, etc) are only found on Intel systems. This must be a consideration when purchasing a system.

As you are posting on an HP forum, I am assuming that you are looking at HPs. If you want to go with an Athlon 64, this might be a mistake. You might want to look at the eMachines m6811 in the same price range, or the Sager 4750 for a little more: (http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/notebooks/product.cfm?ProductType=4750).

For Intel machines, HP has some excellent deals with the zd7000.

    Just a thought.

I'm sorry I didn't mention this point myself. It is true that the AMD 64 systems currently offered by HP are not good for gaming at all. They otherwise are a good deal and powerful machines. HP did put very old video card's in the AMD systems though so don't plan on doing any 3D gaming with any new games. They might run but will be very crippled and not to fun. I know from experence! My current computer is much better for gaming and I enjoy it a lot!

I ve had both in the last 3 1/2 weeks. I had a Gateway 7405Gx and now have the X6000, I would rather have had the AMD 64 in my rig but it wasn't an option, And as far as i can tell the P4 just runs hotter, I myself have not noticed a difference while playing Doom 3 or Prince of Persia.
Im sure later on down the road I'll be kicking my self in the ass but hopefully by then HP will smarten up and start having it as an option so i can switch it out.
