I'm in need of a relatively cheap laptop. Needs to run VistaBusiness, and be reasonably fast for future needs (ie, not be hopelessly obsolete in 2 years). Mostly it'll be used for coding and testing (MS-Studio.NET, Oracle, SqlServer, etc), plus the usual goofing around on the 'net.

    HP nx7300 Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66ghz), 15.4", 512 mb ram, 80 GB hd, dvd/cd-rw ~ 850

    HP 6515 Turion 64 X2 TL-50 (1.6ghz), 14.1", 512 mb ram, 80 gb hd, dvd/cd-rw ~ 775.

I'll be ordering two 1-gb memory sticks, if I go with either of these laptops. I'm vaguely convinced the intel chips are "better", but not at all certain I'd ever notice any difference in my normal use. Comments?

In normal use, both will perform pretty well. However, depending on how large your coding projects go you might want to invest the extra money into the more powerful Intel chip. Right now the Intel chips can be significantly faster than their AMD competitors.

intel is faster by about 10-15% during video encoding... For what you are doing you are doing, it doesn't matter. I compile code on my Turion 64 X2 TL-60 which does have a 400mhz speed increase of the TL-50, and I don't even see the "compiling..." status. all i ever see is "compiling... Done".

either will work, fine, remeber you can always update the processor in a year or 2 if it becomes 'hopelessly obsolete'
