I finally clen installed XP and made my nc8430 work like a charm, but today my DVD (hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-t10n) stopped working. It isn't writing or reading any media and if I don't remove media from it, it stops my system working (freez).

any idea, firmware update, anything to make it work?

Have you checked the transfer mode under the drive in Device Manager? It could have slipped into PIO mode instead of DMA.
