    hi there can anyone help me i have a presario 1500 which i bought in 2002 the cd/rw drive does not read cd or anything i put in there anymore i bought a new drive and it still doent read compaq told me it was a mechanical problem and they coulnt trouble shoot it over the phone............i went to device manager and it says device working properly what could be the problem

    This is a difficult problem to diagnose. Since you said you replaced the drive and it's still not working, you can limit it to:

    1) The connection.
    Is it plugged in correctly? I'm assuming since device manager can see it that it is.

    2) Damaged media.
    Did you try different disks? New disks? Did you try burning a cd? Do you get any errors?

    3) Kaputt motherboard.
    Your controller may be damaged.

    4) Drivers.
    This is very unlikely, but it's worth a try.

    nah the controller is good it does everthing ok but read cds is there a way i can restore back to factory settings without using the disks i received with it?

    If you have a recovery partition, you may be able to. I'm unfamiliar with the Presario 1500, so I'm not sure.
