    Hi

A friend of mine has got a HP nc8230 notebook that keeps asking for:

Insert Smart card upon startup immediately after the POST.

    Advice needed pls :D

    Thanks

You need to go into BIOS, as there is a setting in there that you can turn off.

Was the notebook just purchased off someone? I believe the SmartCard is a security feature to lock out the laptop.

    Thanks for the rapid responses.

I can't enter the bios. it shows press F10 to enter ROM based setup, but when i press F10 it shows Entering setup but does not enter it.

He claims that it sometimes boots normally, also. It sounds weird to me, so i decided to post here@NBR for consultations :D

no, actually he's been using it normally for roughly about a year or so, until someone opened the PC to fix the power plug.

I seem to have found a way to get it to boot. That's by depressing the left corner (just above the SC/SD slot port).

I opened it but found no problems; everything looked normal inside (no bad solder joints, loose seatings, ...)

I cleaned & reseated the SD expansion card, but still prompts for Insert Smart Media.
However, when i press the corner & power it up it boots normally & loads the OS.

What do you think of this?
Should i try taking out the expansion card from the MBD?

    Thanks Greg

I did try turning off the feature once i got it to complete the POST & enter the BIOS config, but to no avail. :frown:

    It didn't solve the problem.

Apparently, he doesn't use this feature (according to him).
I disabled the feature in BIOS but it still prompts.

This looks like a common problem with the nc8200 & another series, according to HP forums, but no solution other than buying a new motherboard is provided, unfortunately. :mad2:

Any advice to get this resolved soon will be highly appreciated. :)
