oh yeah, i also tried creating a new LAN connection and when i click finish, nothing shows up, only the wireless ones do.

for XP did you install the lan drivers. XP probably will not detect the card out of the box like Vista will
-
Have you tried uninstalling the drivers for the NIC card and then reinstalling them?
Right Click on My Computer-->Manage-->Device Manager-->Network Adapters
What do you see under Network Adapters? If you see the NIC card right click and go to properties. Uninstall the drivers for the card and reinstall them.
Another thing, do you still have the HP recovery partition or the recovery DVDs for the laptop? or you can go to HP online and go to software and drivers and look up your laptop and download the updated drivers for the machine and install them.
Also, did you just do a fresh install of XP? Have you installed all the drivers and software that came with the laptop after you did a install of XP? Is it the NIC that is built onto the motherboard or is it an add-on card? Give us as much information you can about what you have done so far and the specifics surrounding the problem so we can get a better idea. -
i did a fresh install, but im pretty sure i installed the NIC card. but just to be sure im going to the hp.com site.
also i cant find the drivers for NIC at hp.com. they only have the wireless lan drivers. if you look below you can find my model # -
You can use the V3117AU drivers, they are the same for all AMD v3000 branch. The Chipset driver includes the windows XP lan driver you are looking for.

Follow this link and put in your P/N number which is located on the bottom of your laptop and it should bring you to the right drivers page. After you're at the driver page it will ask you what OS you are using and then direct you to the right drivers. The NIC card should be under Driver - Chipset because the NIC card is integrated with the motherboard.

thanks that worked! finally detects the ethernet port
