Darth, im guessing it was because your file was corrupted. Until recently when i moved here to Maryville, dial up was all that was availible and i had the same problem with corrupted download files. I am pretty sure it is not any problem with your computer. When i was on dialup i used to dread doing a fresh OS instal, putting AV on my computer alone took about an hour and a half, lol.I have the charter package, tv cable, phone with free long distance and 3 meg broad band for about the same as just my phoneline and dial up service was in bama.Man i can really feel the pain of anyone stuck with dial up.

Don't understand where the above comments are going.
I just received my HP dv6000z and had to throw out 200 MB of infomercial junk and trial offers. Then the feature to burn recovery media didn't funtion. Before I came up for air, I was deluged with requests for - what I suspect - favorable reviews by the Powers Customer Excellence outfit.
When I read the small print for my rebate rights or obligations, I found that I had not been sent an invoice which is imperative to qualify. Have been requesting one now for over a week by phone and e-mail, without any response. I suspect it's HP's policy to either not honor rebate promises or make submission of the documentation difficult enough for people to just give up.
Have asked for an RMA to return the whole shebang within my allotted 21 days. Don't want to do business with an outfit that can't even wait 12 months (the warranty period!!) to treat their customers shoddily. -
Did the notebook come with some other anti-virus (or spy ware, firewall, etc) from another company (ehem: Norton)? If so, consider getting a registry cleaner (and some other free ware program) to eliminate traces of the old program. I'm fairly certain even Norton has the correct instructions on how to uninstall their stuff.
BTW, software can *really* do some screwy stuff when the uninstall routine doesn't catch every old trace of the program. -
Night, you are so right,it is important to do a reg clean after uninstalling all the junk that comes on a new computer or after uninstalling something like an other AV. I use Ccleaner and it is easy to use.Once you get everything cleaned up and your start menu slimmed down as much as possible and your HD defagged , it sure makes everything run a lot smoother. Birdie, i understand your frustration too, but if you read the peer t peer stuff on all the other brands you will see they ALL have their problems. You might see that one person has customer service probs and the next had great service from the same place. I guess it depends on if you get lucky and talk to the right person. I really dont think you will find any brand that is better than another in that reguard. Unfortunatly there are far more people that post customer service problems or from those that got a lemon computer than from those that have had no problems .

CCleaner is good for registry cleaning (as kituwa said), but also check out Driver Cleaner Pro. While you aren't cleaning up drivers, you can use the Cabinet cleaner to get rid of old crap in the .cab files for XP (which may have records regarding previously used drivers and software).
