    Yesterday I bought a R4000 and I must say I love it!
    Now, I', sorta confused about the processor.
    On the box it says: AMD Sempron 3200+ 1.8 Ghz
    The win XP system info says: AMD Sempron 3200+ 994 MHz
    Belarc advisor ( 7.0.) comes back with : 1000 MHz AMD Athlon 64

    What is really in there?? How do I find out?

    Thanks!

    When you run off of the battery, the Cool N. Quiet technology will limit the speed to 1GHz when you have the 8 cell battery to conserve battery life. If you have the 12 cell battery, then you can run at the full 1.8GHz while on battery. On AC of course it should always run at 1.8GHz.

    Here's info I posted on another forum about this.

    Here's some more specs:

    8 cell battery 4.4Ah 65Whr
    12 cell battery 6.6Ah 95Whr

    Sempron AC power supply - 90W
    Athlon 64 AC power supply 120W

    Max battery size is 95W

    With Cool'n'Quiet the CPU speed is designed to be limited in speed due to the battery power. The minimum CPU speed it would run at is 1GHz. Here's a breakdown for the AMD 3500+ based on the following document

    Athlon 64 specs - http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/30430.pdf
    [Edit] - I forgot to add the link.

    Example
    Amd Athlon 64 3500+

    * 2.2Ghz - 89W - AC only
    * 2.0GHz - 69W - 12 cell battery needed
    * 1.8GHz - 50W - 8 cell battery needed

    I concur with dragonwolf, but the cpu will throttle when the power setting is set at Portable/Laptop. When it is set to always on it stays at 1.8GHz.

    In order to conserve power and also run cooler the processor runs at low speed when not too much work is being done or if it is idle. When the processor is used 100% then the speed clocks up to its maximum instantly.

    Try a different hardware monitoring program like Mobile Meter which gives a graph of the clock speed which shows you when it scales up and down.

    Intel also uses the same kind of technology called as Speedstep...

    Oh, one more thing most cpu monitoring software will report this cpu as an Athlon 64 since the Sempron is built on the same architeture and is essentially the same except the cache,clock speed are reduced and the 64 bit extensions are disabled.
