interesting. My friend asked me to look at his r4000, as it gets bsod's constantly. This r4000, though, only has 1 internal fan on the cpu. The other intake vent is near the igp, but there is clearly no fan there.

I guess that would be the cause of the bsod's, no?

I don't know how true it is, but back in the day it was said that some of the defeatured units had lesser cooling than the full featured ones. This may account for the missing fan.

Well, after talking to the owner, it seemed that he tried to do some upgrades to the laptop.

The fan for the gpu died and he didn't bother to replace it. Well, considering that another fan costs aroun 70 bucks (on ebay), he didn't bother to buy it.

Also learned that he tried to upgrade the processor, from the original athlon 3200+ to a 4000+ model. It didn't work, so he put back the original. Well, he failed to tighten down the heatsink on the processor and apply new thermal paste to it. Anyways, after reseating the heatsink and applying new thermal paste, the notebook runs like a champ.

The 4000+ should have worked, assuming that he was running the latest bios. It was an option on those units at the time. I once considered doing it myself, but could not justify the time involved for such a small jump (3800+ to 4000+).

He did have the latest bios, but i'm not sure if he had it when he tried to upgrade. either way, he's back to his original processor and the laptop works.
