ok so i have just created a custom windows xp cd using nLite, but was wondering about the activation. is there a way around it? i have heard that you could copy some files from the pre-installed xp. is this true?
also what are the basic drivers you would need (just to make sure) for a compaq v3000z? cause i included them in a disc but dont want what i dont need i just want the basics, without all the bloatware

Bypassing activation for Windows cannot be discussed. You really should have no issues.
Drivers, you can download all of those from HP.com. -

Actually, there is a legal way:
Backup Activation Method
Basically, copy the \windows\system32\wpa.dbl file to the right directory on your install CD. I strongly recommend using this method as it avoids the nuisance of having to call Microsoft and have their drone read off a long string of characters to let you reactivate the Windows license you paid for. I had that happen to me once, before I knew to copy wpa.dbl.
Just be sure not to give out any copies of your install CD with your personal wpa.dbl file integrated!
Drivers are not bloatware. You need drivers for all the devices your notebook has. Ethernet and WiFi drivers are the most critical but it's certainly useful to have video, audio, etc. work on first boot.
