What is the difference between the recovery DVDs packaged with my new HP laptop and the recovery discs that they recommend making once with the Vista Recovery manager?

None, they are pretty much the same thing. Both will restore your computer to the state that it came in when you turned it on for the first time, useless junk software preloaded and all. :(

The Recovery Disk Set that you got with your system will restore your system to the base configuration of the system as shipped. Any disk set that you make with your Recovery Manager will restore to the configuration of the Recovery Partition. In most cases they're the same, but in some they're not.

What about wireless, does that have to be activated again after restoring to the factory state?

Do you have the "Upgrade Now" disc? That's the same thing too.

If you still have the recovery partition, you can create another set of recovery disk. Here are some information I copied from the "Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION" thread:

    Good luck!
