i want to reformat my nc8430 but after windows loads all the files it says it can't detect any hard disks.. am i supposed to install SATA drivers or something?

Yes, you need to either get a floppy drive and use the "F6 method" to load the drivers or slipstream the SATA drivers into a new XP disc using nLite.

is there a guide on how to do this and where would i get the sata drivers from?

In your original notebook configuration, the drivers are in C:\SWSetup\HDD.
You can also download them through HP's web site. Search for nc8430 drivers.
Ultimately, you can install XP without SATA first, by disabling SATA Native Mode in the BIOS. After you load into Windows, update with the Intel SATA drivers.
