I have an opportunity to buy an HP DV5-1157CA in Canada for a great price:

    http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=762478&affixedcode=WW

It's a 15.4" which makes it bigger obviously than the m1330.

    Pro's:
    -----
    Centrino 2/Montevino platform
    4 GB vs. 3GB that I have
    9600M GT vs. 8400M GS
possible avoidance of future GPU problems
great clearance price of $997 Canadian

    Con's:
    ------
    bigger form factor
plastic chassis vs. magnesium alloy and aluminum
    lower battery life
    no fingerprint reader
still an Nvidia GPU (can we trust Nvidia anymore)
    2 Ghz P7350 vs. 2.4 Ghz T8300

What do you guys think I should do?

Due to new architecture the P7350 is equivalent to a T8100 at 2.1GHz, so a little slower than your current CPU.

AFAIK, the 9600M GT is fine, only the 8000 series was affected by over heating GPUS

From my use so far, the DV5 chassis, is very solid.

You can get a 12 cell battery, but it does hang out of the back, like dells 9cells.

If you can sell your XPS on for a reasonable price, Id go for it, your 8400 is like a ticking bomb.....

If you act quick you might be able to take advantage of the free printer ($50 mail in rebate), $6 ($30 regular price) mouse and $9.99 ($79.99 regular price) wireless router for staples boxing week special which might still be going on.

I bought this laptop 5 days ago and im loving it. Currently playing Left 4 Dead.

    edit:
Also if you look on www.redflagdeals.com you might be able to find some coupons which I did. Managed to get an additional $40 off my purchase.

    Thanks guys for the advice....

marcopolo, does the unit have bluetooth installed? The Staples web-site doesn't specify it, but in-store the sign does.

If your looking at the DV5T look at direct from HP

they dropped the upgrade price to the 9600GT from 200 to 50 dollars, plus you can use the extra stackable 150 off coupon

I scored mine with similar specs for 790 shipped

I can confirm it does bluetooth, just had it connect to my phone.

Yeah Ive tried making an account on hp.com but it wont allow you to put a Canadian address so they don't ship to those of us up north unfortunately.

I just bought the DV5T, and because it runs Vista64, the software I use to access my work is incompatible.

    :(

Has anyone installed Vista 32-bit on a DV5T?
