I have recently purchased a new HP laptop after my previous Samsung machine died. I have backed up all of the data on my portable drive but I cant seem to find a way to restore the files from the hard drive to the new laptop. I backed up using Samsung Recovery under windows 7 and the new laptop is on windows 8. Any ideas???

That's not a file format. I meant like jpg, doc, mp3, etc. I'm assuming they're proprietary and you'll have to use the Samsung software to get at them. Whether you can do that on a HP, I don't know. I you can pull the drive out and get at them that way, that's another option.

Ah ok. If they were just jpeg and mp3 I could just copy them from the hard drive over but it's all my emails etc as well I'm in need of. I'll check the hard drive when I get home and see what I can find.

You said you have backed up using samsung recovery. What is the file extension of the backed up file. It could be zip, tar, iso, etc. Once you tell us the format we can recommend you for another application that can open the backup file.
