my 9000t shutdown while i was doing disk imaging with acronis to the second HDD. the fan just went faster and faster until it went off like the plug was being pulled.

should i send my unit in for HP to check? don't really feel good for a month old notebook to be ripped open at the service center.

It overheated. If it wasn't on a hard, flat surface with plenty of space around it, there's probably a problem with it. My first 9000t exhibited the same behavior when accessing the disk for any kind of extended period. Once it started, it got worse pretty quickly. Not to be too negative, but my guess is you're encountering a similar problem. Has it been 20 days or less? If so, you can return it and get an entirely new one: that's what I did. If not, I'd definitely send it in to have it repaired. You can give it some time to see if the problem worsens, but unfortunately it probably will.

User reviews on CNET here: User Reviews dv9000t

We got a 9000 from Costco a few days ago. Just sitting doing nothing, the palm/wrist rest area was heating up, as well as the touchpad. HP said that should not happen, so we exchanged it - same issue. Going through HP, we have not been able to find a fix (they had us download the BIOS - it was the same version - and reinstall, plus a slew of other things to try to change the cooling issue).

I went to try out a 6000 and 2000 - only the 2000 had less of a heat issue, but it still gets warm over the hd where your left wrist rests. The 9000 has a lot of powerful components, a big screen to run, etc, and you may need to get a chill mat/pad with fans to put under the laptop to help dissipate the heat and prevent shutdowns.

I think we are taking the second 9000 back too - thank goodness for Costco! But I'm sad, as we got a great deal on it - but I can't type with roasted wrists, so I guess the deal was not good enough.
