    Try:
    a) Format Factory
    b) Handbrake

Format Factory is excellent but I've also heard great things about handbrake.

it should take about an hour to encode a dvd. if you have the extra space, just make an dvd iso image instead. its larger but it takes 10 minutes, same exact quality as dvd. then you just mount it and the system will think you inserted the dvd into the dvd drive. then when you return from the trip just delete em. would take 50 minutes instead of 5 and a half hours to do 5 cds.

you can use 2 free programs to do this. imgburn to make the disk image and virtualclonedrive to mount it.

Please define forever. 1 hour? 4 hours?

What are your computer specs? This probably has more to do with your speed than what application you are using.
