Unfortunately, it is the dv6 and dv7.

Worth checking out the configurations nonetheless...

Nice to see the processor configurations are not overly expensive:

2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz Included in price

    2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2720QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz +$200.00

    2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2820QM (2.3 GHz, 8MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz +$400.00

Is the dv7 like the Envy 17?

    Whats the difference?

I am planning on buying the Envy 17, but there is no release date or pricing yet, and i need to buy a laptop before February latest.

The upgrades are still WAAAYYYY overpriced, though.

On an odd note, the Select Edition with a 720QM costs $50 more than a similarly configured Quad Edition with a 2630QM. I wonder which is the better deal? lol

Wouldn't this be best posted one forum up, since it doesn't include Envy?
Anyway, prices are ok. I'd never pay $400 for that small of a frequency bump though, but it's nice to have the option.
Let's hope the Envy is next, and that it actually comes faster than the planned end of february.

The Envy 17 has a backlit keyboard, a stronger chassis, and a better screen with a 1080p option (dv7 only has 1600x900).

I think I just got a bit lucky in this deal. I bought a dv7tse at the end of December coupled with a ridiculous amount of rebates and coupons but it came this past Wednesday D.O.A. The display lamp was toast. They told me I needed to wait until today to make an exchange and they just released the QE. It ended up being the closest thing they could replace the SE with since the SE is discontinued. I got it at the same price with a bump up to the 2nd generation processor and a larger HD along with all of my previous customizations on the SE. I did the QE with all of my specs and I'm coming in at $470 below normal retail so I think I won out on this one.

I just configured the dv6 with the new SB CPU and the battery claims made by HP are quite impressive. It says that it lasts 6.74 hrs on the high capacity 6-cell battery and 10 hrs on the 9 cell.
If true, this is quite good, I wonder how is it going to be on the ENVY 17?

I might consider alienware then, even though I hate the design, availability is alpha-omega for me at this point, as I'm in dire need of a laptop, but I don't wanna get old technology just because I can't wait 1.5 month.

The price really isn't to horrible for a really decent config... I customized one and heres what it came out to. In all honesty if I dont hear about an envy 14 or 15 refresh in the next week I might end up with a new pavilion =)

well, I do plan on going to alienware.com tomorrow and playing with their config tool. Let's see what amazing config I come up with and how much it will cost. If its not insane I might get it the Alienware M17x R3, but with the condition of fully understanding their return policy!!!!! There could be a chance I might return it, and I love HP's easy return policy, 21 days no hassle, free shipping back, etc...you guys already know the deal LMFAO :D But yeah, if I can get a chance to play with an Alienware and really make a decision on performance, display, etc... then I might see....

If Alienware has any hint of a RESTOCKING FEE, the deal is off!!! I'm gonna check out their return policy right now...

im pretty sure its 15% restocking but the reps are easy to work with so if you're nice enough and get the right rep, you could have the restocking fee waived..happened to me. Shipping back is free also.

Yeah, if you add blu-ray it tacks on another $100.00 which I suppose isn't TOO horrible but the mediocre display is the only option, which blows my mind considering that you would expect 1080p to be standard these days.

I tried calling Alienware, but the message told me all reps are busy call another time...sheesh, and it disconected me. Anyway, here is the link to their warranty/return policy.

Alienware: Learn More About Our Warranty

I wanted to ask the sales rep 3 questions:

    1. Will I have to pay 15% restocking fee if I decide within the 30 period to return for a full refund. It was not clear on their page..it says "may" be charged 15%....hmmm

    2. Looks like if I have to return within 30 days I will have to pay my own shipping and handling charges? (I don't like that. Especially for a 15 to 20ish pound box).

    3. Even if I decide to keep it, the warranty states the hardware is covered, yadda yadda...but look at the exceptions...last one says "paint and finish." So if the paint fades, chips due to no fault of mine, its not covered? What if the paint damage is seen when I first open the box?

Those 3 questions, depending on how Alienware answers them for me tomorrow, will help decide if I want to "try out" their system. If its gonna cost me for a "try before you commit" I will not do it. I'll let you guys know. ;)

I'm from Norway, but living in the USA, so I'm used to it. In Norway you have a 14 day no-question-asked right to return any item if purchased online. It's by law, so it doesn't matter what manufacturer you buy from. You have to pay the return shipping yourself though, but you really can't complain about that :)

I think it's a nice law, it is in place just because consumers don't always know what to expect when buying an item online compared to a store (where they get to test it before buying), so it gives you an opportunity to return it if it didn't meet your expectations.

Same is a real struggle for me atleast (Australia) because we don't get the fancy in-home repairs or easy fix and replace kind of deal. I had a Toshiba laptop that I had to get fixed had to send it all the way from Queensland to Melbourne and was 1 - 2 months till I got it back. It's ridiculous I hope they bring the standards up.

Otherwise, I completely love my Envy and I've gotten over the initial buyers remorse? I don't know. I do know now that it is a amazing machine and my god its so strikingly beautiful.

I hope I will be like you soon. I'm still trying to get over that fact that Amazon's price is $130 more than Microsoft's price. But then again, some people who buy directly from hp paid $1050 PLUS TAX and slow shipping. So oh well...

Oh and to people, including myself, who are left out of Sandy Bridge, no fear. We shall buy ENVY IVY BRIDGE in 2012!!! HAHAHA!

What is this Radeon 6570 thing? Is that a new gpu or a rebadged 5650?

EDIT: Nm, did my homework. It's a rebaged 5730, which isn't too bad I guess... Any word on switchable graphics for dv6 QE + SB cpu?

I don't get HP's thinking here. They say Envy 17 3D's focus is watching movies, not gaming, that's why they don't put the best GPU available in it, yet still they choose one that only supports UVD2 and not UVD3. What's this about HP?

    What is UVD2 or UVD3?

Never mind, did my homework. Here is what I found out.

Unified Video Decoder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

UVD = Unified Video Decoder. I copied the most relevant part for us below. Looks like the SB refresh will have UVD3. :D

    Barts Radeоn HD 6800 Series UVD 3 <<< 6850 for the Envy 17 3D

AMD Radeon? HD 6800M Series Graphics

Since it's only crap in a new wrapping (rebranded 5800) it will not come with the latest UVD.

So still no hardware blu-ray 3D, which is kinda surprising to me, since it seems to be the entire point of this laptop.

Apoxxx, I checked ur link, yeah its weird about the UVD2 but it does support HDMI 1.4a so all should be good. I expect people will test it out once they get it and see if it really can disply 3D bluray movies on an external 3D tv, that would be a real life test.

But yea wishlist for envy 14

    - Sandy Bridge
    - DDR5 graphics card
    - Radiance back (I'd settle for a Radiance 720)
    - usb 3.0
    - Lighter if humanely possible

I double and triple the Envy 15 with upgraded display and all the fixings.

    I just don't want a huge 17" laptop.

I'll find someone else selling a good 15 or maybe 16" if HP doesn't step up to the plate.

No floral patterns. What's the matter with you. don't you know that HP industrial designers intentionally attempt to make their laptops look as unappealling and as dorky as possible. It's tough, but they continue to be successful :)

How about continuing with the Envy Beats styling or emulating the clean lines of the Google Chrome laptop? Granted, these mimic Apple styling - but is that a bad thing?

perhaps, they should go with something more unisexual? like lines or something? like the Argento finish on the dv series but different. just some subtle crisscrossing dots perhaps? instead of the floral design.

My guess is that they had to put the floral patterns in there to try to prevent being sued by the allmighty Apple, you know, that tiny company that reinvents old technology as their own, makes it popular, and then sues everyone who tries to follow them :)

    no its not.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paisley_(design)

it resembles a mango or whatever that people may think at a sunny day, its ancient and its there. It dont look like a flower at all.

and for people that complain just get the beats edition.
