I'm about to order the dv5t, but need to decide between the higher or lower resolution. I'm also gonna get the integrated tv tuner so getting a higher resolution would be better right? Would the text be too small? Currently I'm using a 14.1" with 1280x800 and I find it to be perfect just maybe a little bit higher in resolution would be okay though. I live far away from electronics stores so I cant really go and look at em.

I can't tell you how much I LOVE my 1680 x 1050, if my resolution were a tangible object, I would give it a smooch.

That's all I have to say, there are reasons for getting higher/lower, but I would go insane if I had a lower res.

Indeed. The higher res definitely makes a difference. I am using 1440x900 on a 17" and am strongly considering upgrading the LCD to a higher res model.

Oh man, that's an additional dagger with a 17".

I'm on a 14" using 1440, and I just can't fit as much on my desktop. As far as text being too small, you can always magnify the text in your browser, or zoom in on a document...but if you don't have a higher res, you can never fit as much on your screen.

The one thing I could see being a problem is perhaps running a game...say you want to run it at higher quality instead of higher resolution...it may not look as good on a higher res monitor to choose a lower than max resolution in order to increase fps or increase graphics settings...but I can't vouch for that since I only play CS:S...perhaps someone else could pipe in.

I have the 17" dv9500t with 1680x1050 and it is probably pefert resolution for computer use. Before this I had a 15.4" Dell 6000D at 1680x1050 and it was great, but small text to get the all the screen real estate in. Any time I went to show someone something on the dell, they would complain about how small it was. I was used to it. The screen itself was much better on the dell than the hp, but that is irrelevant. When my wife got the dell when I upgrade to the HP, she needed the DPI increased to 120 to enlarge the fonts so she could read them comfortably. While some might consider this an age issue, we are both under 40. 1440x900 would probably be great for a 15.4 for just computer use, but alas that is not an option. TV viewing would be better on highest posible resolution. Another note that increasing the font in the browser as mentioned won't change the size of the menu fonts on applications. The only thing that changes it most places is the DPI setting and it isn't perfect for all applications. It does distort some dialogs for some applications. Just more food for thought.
