    hi,
i have a month old 9700 with vista prem. about a week ago my screen randomly started to go black like it was entering sleep mode. i called hp they said it was from static electricity so they had me hold down the power button for 30 seconds. i restarted the notebbok and twenty five minutes later it went black again.
i changed the power settings to never go to sleep or hibernate, now what?
    thanks for sharing your knowledge,
    dave

have you tried using an external monitor? this will rule out if its the gpu or the actual LCD screen

I had the same problem with my 9700. A few weeks ago someone here suggested: turn laptop off, unplug, take off battery, and remove CMOS button battery on RAM cover. I did this, put it all back together after 10 minutes, no more black screen and works better than ever.

Try resetting your notebook by removing all batteries (including CMOS)

EDIT: oops bctr said the same thing

My HP screen just went dark too after 1.5 years of use...safe guess is something with the LCD or inverter.

As far as PC manufacturers go, that's now 2 for 2 on machines that can't even functionally last 2 years. Oh, and I guess it isn't surprising that the one I had before was a Dell.

I'm so sick of all these piece of **** PCs...all these companies keep excreting all these series of machines with stupid names like the DT4938z, when they're all the same cheap, ugly looking, poorly functioning CRAP made somewhere in China. I'm seriously thinking about making the switch to macbook pro and trying my luck there.
