Can anyone help - I've lost screen lighting in an older model presario - I removed and re-inserted memory module - still no go. Can just see faded icons etc and operate normally with a bright light shining onto the screen - but take away the light and the screen is pitch black. tks

You have to replace the backlight. I have no clue why you reinstalled your RAM for a screen problem...

thanks - is it a complicated task replacing the backlight? I know it sounds weird, but I reinstalled the RAM according to advice from the HP support line on Start up - Boot or Blank screen probs. thanks again.

Backlights are difficult to replace. Most likely you just have a burned out LCD inverter which is relatively easy to replace. You can probably find a (used) replacement on eBay.
